Nursing Internship Interview

Dear OR Nurses,

I am talking to the executive director of the OR at a large hospital that I would like to get an internship at this summer. I was told that during our conference call I was to convince him why I wanted to be an intern in the OR and ask him good questions about the program and hospital. I don't want to get on the phone and ask him how many OR's they have and how many patients they see in any given day, becuase I feel those questions involve no real thought. However I am having a hard time coming up with any other real questions. Any suggestions???

Specializes in ER, OR, PACU, TELE, CATH LAB, OPEN HEART.

Well, why DO YOU want to intern in the OR????????? What attracted you to that field of nursing. What do you know about what responsibilities and duties an OR nurse has on a daily basis. How do you see yourself fitting in as a part of the team. What are your learning goals for the OR INTERNSHIP???????????

Answer these hard questions and then sell, sell, sell yourself.

I feel as though I can sell myself pretty well and I do know why I want to be in the OR. That isnt the part that really worries me. I have interviewed with this hospital before and I know they know i REALLY want to work in the OR. This time around they wanted me to meet with the Director to ask him my questions I have. I don't really have a whole lot of questions because I have found out almost everything I needed to know by Stalking the hospital online... The questions to him are the difficult part for me!

Just ask the questions you already know for affirmation.

Ask questions about what a typical day is like for someone in that position. How they incorporate evidence based research into their practice? Research the latest issues with OR nursing and you could ask questions like what is their hospital doing to prevent wrong site errors, are they proactive about preventing errors? Things that show that you have thought through the nursing role in the OR should be good. Hope that helps.
