I am thinking about pursuing a career as a nurse. I am currently a CNA and sometimes feel that I am looked down on. I feel this is the biggest downfall of my job. So as a nurse do you feel as if doctors look down on you, and treat you as if you don't know anything, or do you work as equals.

Depends on the doctor. Some are highly arrogant and nurses are nothing but slaves meant to follow orders. Thank God, this is not the norm, but they do exist. The rest do respect us and appreciate us.

The problem isn't about knowing my own self worth, its in feeling I am respected in my job. I would feel a problem would be if I felt something to be the case, and when I brought this forward to the Dr., he would just ignore me, jeopardizing patient well being. I sometimes am torn with just becoming a Dr., but the years neccessary just seem like such a commitment.
I'm not talking about self-worth either. I am respected by the doctors I work with, and they treat me as a peer rather than having the "Me doctor-you nurse" attitude.

If you give respect, you usually get respect. I have worked as a nursing assistant, LPN, RN, case manager, and now advanced practice RN and I have found this true in every setting.

I strongly agree with the general direction this thread is taking. Most of the time (with some exceptions of course) ... true respect is not something people just give you or not give you ... true respect is earned. How you conduct your life and your work will be the biggest factor in determining whether or not your coworkers respect you or not.
Some people "command respect." Other people don't. That's true of both doctors and nurses. Choose the career that best matches your interests and talents and do it well ... and you will earn the respect you seek.

The MD's that I wiork with are all very nice and respectful, we have a very good work environment. We also have a nurse manager that stands up for us in times of need. Treat others the way you want to be treated and you won't have a problem with most people, there are exceptions to every rule though.
