Nurses caps!

My first job out of nursing school was at a large Catholic hospital with a strict all white dress code for the nurses. Several of the nurses wore caps with their whites and the patients loved it. I for one loved the all white, I liked looking at the nurses station and knowing who the nurses were. Today I wear colored scrubs or white pants with a print top, but actually wouldn't mind going back to all white (pant suits, not dresses!). I also wouldn't mind a stricter dress code regarding shoes. Nurses, while not rich, make enough money to invest in a pair of shoes once in awhile. I notice a lot of colleagues wearing shoes I wouldn't walk the dog in, filthy, frayed, etc. Several patients have commented to me in the past about fellow nurses' dirty shoes, stained scrubs, etc. Even Walmart has nurses shoes for under $25....

Well, I have to plead guilty to sloppy shoes:imbar It was never my intention to try to be like Michael Moore, but one day the nursing home called my cell phone while I was working on my farm and they had an emergency: one of the nurses on 3-11 didn't show up and they needed someone quick. I told them I was filthy, had been messing around with sheep all day and would not be able to go home to get my scrubs. They said they didn't care if I came wearing my birthday suit. So I showed up at work with stinky clothes and dirty shoes and they were thrilled to see me.

Brand new sparkly white shoes may look pretty, but they hurt like h*ll after 13 hours on your feet. And these are high quality cross-trainers, not Walmart shoes or "nurses shoes" that hurt my feet anyway. I break in my shoes walking indoors - the mall, etc - NEVER, EVER at work. That is unless I plan to call in the next shift with foot pain and leg cramps. They are not filthy or frayed, but they aren't bright white either.

If a patient is feeling good enough to worry about the nurses' shoes, it is probably time for them to be discharged. Shoes are on the nasty floor and the dirtiest dingiest pair in existance are probably still cleaner than the floor of most inpatient hospital units.

I had to wear one during my clincals just a year ago when I was going to school to become an LPN I hated it. They get in your way and also harbor germs. Why in world would anyone even think about those caps?????

In my dream, I was at Wal-Mart shopping for supplies with the other nursing students. As I was walking into the store, I passed another student and she had one of those hats on the top of her basket. I have been so afraid we'll have to wear those stupid things in school!
