NPI number?

Does anyone know if you can work without an NPI number? I start next week but the NPI is taking 20-30 days as of now to be released.

If you can work as what? I've worked for a couple decades as a CNS without needing a NPI number.

I got my NPI number the same day I applied for it.

I had an NPI number as an RN, I just updated my taxonomy and it went through almost immediately. I only recently got an NPI number about 3 months ago, and again,I got it the same day.

Depends on what you're doing. I couldn't work as a NP without one. I would check with your employers.

NPI numbers are usually generated same day. I haven't heard of one taking 30 days. Without an NPI number, you are limited in your ability to bill. So whether you can work or not depends on what you will be doing and how your employer wants you to bill.

It's needed to bill. Your arrangement may allow using an institutional NPI. Just get if you're billing.

I graduate in December and was just told that I should apply for a NPI now because there is a 45 to 60 day wait time. I'm in PA. Should I just apply now since I as an RN and then update when I am licensed as an NP?

Mine took less than an hour. Completed the form online and they sent an email with the number.. that was just a few weeks ago

I would - I just used my hospital's address since that's where I was going to be working after graduation. I received it now after a 5-week wait but until that time I had to bill under my MD.
