APRNs where I work, State of CT - Dept of Mental Health, start @ $35.73/hr and top out at 48.50/hr at the top step (seel HC-30 in the grid via the link below):

One of the reasons employment with the state was unattractive. I have great benefits too, but don't want to top out at that wage or start so low.

Currently I am making $35 an hour with benefits which I would never have accepted by itself. I also get one third of the profits. This generally adds up to about $120,000 a year.

It's always good to inquire about a productivity bonus.

Hi, FL Nurse . . . I worked as a NP in women's health in SW FL for the state. Pay wasn't great, but benefits were and the state also paid all my student loans as well as sent me for NP training while giving me my weekly paycheck as well as perdiem, travel expenses, etc. I recently moved to central FL. I'm now working nights (I've always been a night owl) in L&D as a nurse and make more than any private practice offered me as a practitioner! I do have a couple of friends who opened their own practice and are doing quite well. If I didn't have as many years on me as I do, I certainly would have considered doing that! Now, I'm anxious to start travel nursing!

Maybe adult or family practitioners pay more. FL, however, is notoriously stingy in paying nurses or nurse practitioners!

They are going for between 60-80 K here in the Midwest. Some places do offer "bonuses" on top of a salary which is about $30-$35/hour, and you have to take into account whether or not you will be getting benefits. Also remember, the bonuses are often tied to the number of bodies you run through the office, so if you want a raise, you have to see more bodies - which may translate into less time with each patient, and/or staying later hours (just in case you don't stay late enough anyway).

The Advance for Nurse Practitioners journal quoted an average of $75k/year, if I remember correctly.

Sadly, as an anp it is difficult to find jobs - most employers here are looking for fnp's now.

Sorry to be a bit cynical - I just left private practice for a corporate position, and so far (2 weeks) all I miss about it is having my stethoscope around my neck.
