No call back after interview and after accepting position on a med-surg unit

Okay, this is going to be a little long...I apologize ahead of time. LOL.

I am a new graduate...I graduated in Dec. 2008 and became licensed Feb. 2009. I had a hard time finding a job at the big hospitals in town, so I decided to apply to a traveling nurse agency that staffs nurses in western Montana. I told them that I was looking for a temp. for hire position (meaning, a rural facility would try me out for a few weeks and see if they want to hire me full-time or not). I got a temp for hire position in a little rural facility, where they have an ER, 6 inpatient beds, and it's attached to a nursing home where CNAs and LPNs staff the nursing home. On the hospital side,...there is only one RN. I was a little hesitant since I am a new grad and all, but I thought, "hey, its a temp for hire. I am going to try it out and see how it is. What the he**?" haha. Yeah, I don't recommend taking a job at a rural facility unless you have some kind of experience. I oriented with another nurse for 6 weeks, and then I was suppose to stay in town for 2 weeks and work at the big hospital on the med-surg floor to get more experience. I was getting ready for my last shift of the 6 weeks orientation when I get a phone call from the staffing agency. They told me that the supervisor at the rural hospital was not impressed with me at all. My docmentation was crappy, and I looked scared all of the time. I was scared when I was there, I must admit. Some of the ER's that walked in were petrifying...but I did it the best I could...all the while thinking, "How the h-e-double hockey sticks am I going to be able to do this all by myself???" I am so disapponted the the rural facility supervisor didn't speak to me in person...and she waited for 6 weeks to go by before she said anything at all!:angryfire

So I started the two weeks at the big hospital in town on the Med-surg floor. I realized after my first three days there that being on a med-surg floor with other RN's was the place for me. Between my first and second week, I had a meeting with the rural hospital nursing manager, and she told me that she wanted me to work there as an on-call when needed. I told her that I need a full-time job, and as soon as I mentioned MAYBE trying to get hired at the bigger hospital in town, she flipped and said that if I did that, then I wouldn't be needed at their facility. Okay, crazy lady....so I applied at the bigger hospital for a new grad position and talked to the manager while I was working there. :D LOL

So, I interviewed and was offered a position...I accepted the position two weeks ago. I am so excited! He told me that since I am not a typical new grad, they will be shortening my orientation a bit. He said my orientation will be shorter than the typical new grad...but longer than an experienced RN. So he will be making a new position for me and he needed HR to post this position online and I needed to apply for it. He said that he was hiring me for a different position, so I needed to apply for the position I was being hired for...not the original new grad position. Anyways, he said he would call me back as soon as the position was posted online. A week goes by and I gave him a call to make sure everything was okay...He said everything was fine and he was still waiting for HR to clear the position and post it online.

Well, another week has went by. Should I call him again? Or should I wait it out? I mean, can they withdraw the offer if budget won't approve the position? Should I be applying for other positions incase this one doesn't go through?

I am sorry for all the random questions. If you have read up until now, thanks!! Any suggestions would be great!!

You poor thing. Seems like it has been quite rough for you. It is such a difficult call to make when you don't want to be annoying but you also need to find out information. I would start applying to other positions and then if a few other days go by and he does not call you back about he position that you are seeking than I wouldcalHR again and just ask the question again. So sorry I cannot offer you the best advice but I wish you good luck and I hope that the position gets posted soon for you.

Can you call HR and check?

Just curious - what city/town are you in? I grew up in Missoula, and have actually been seriously considering applying for new grad positions in Montana, since I seem to be swimming in competition, here in Northern CA. Good luck!!! I miss MT.

That's hilarious! I live in Missoula. I moved here from Las Vegas once I graduated last Dec. due to my dad being ill. I didn't think I would have a problem finding a job...I met both of the Hospitals nurse recruiters last summer and even some of the unit managers. Yeah, as you can tell from my novel, it's been tough! lol It's just so hard to secure a job! It's crazy!

Well, I guess I will call HR today?
