what next?

my rn friend wrote this e-mail to me yesterday. how do i answer her?

i was accepted in one hospital. i resigned previous job, turned down other job offers, signed the paperworks in new job, did the pre-employement health check up( which were all normal) and was about to start orientation from monday and got a phone call from the nurse recruiter on friday stating that the orientation has been postponed 8 weeks.

what next for me? i have no job.....two dependants...who will pay my bills? if i apply in other facilities....they will definitely ask me where i am currently working and why i resigned my previous job. i don't know how to answer. is it okay if i say...i was offered a job but their start date was postponed.....

i am so mad at those people but can't think of any solution.

i am so embarrased to go to my previous employer and ask to rehire me.

That...stinks!

Hate to say it, but I think I would apply to other facilities & lie. Or go pick up a waitress job.

Sorry, I don't have any other advice...please keep us updated!

that sucks. and they wonder why there's a nursing shortage. many employers do no treat their staff or potential staff well...

tell your friend to go to a nurse staffing agency (temporary agency) and see if she can pick up some shifts at area health care facilities. will tide her over until orientation --- or give her some breathing room while she tries to find another job. i don't think telling the truth about how she became unemployed will hurt her. the problem clearly lies with the employer she was going to work for. most people in this industry can understand how someone could not take a 2 month vacation. best of luck to her.

Why would they hire someone and then postpone orientation by 8 weeks? That's a long time! Would you want to work someplace that does this? Is this a normal thing to do? I wouldn't be afraid to go to my former employer, they may be able to use the help for 8 weeks. The worst they can say is no, and you are already trained in.

- go back to the former employer for rehire (it's been done before)

- agency

- truth is okay about what happened

- get something in writing about start dates, before resigning

- check the newspaper for employment ads

Thanks everybody. Your help is appreciated. My friend was offered a job in another facility but the whole background check and reference verification wil take couple of weeks. She said it is okay.......she got some time to spend with kids. We have to look into the positive side of everything.
