Hello,
My name is Jessica and I am a newbie. Currently I am looking to get my nursing degree and am not enrolled in a program yet. I am living in Florida but it is very expensive to live alone here. I am thinking of relocating to Nashville, TN or to SC or NC. I am interested in finding out if there are any affordable schools in those areas and possibly if there are hospitals which offer tuition incentives. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I live in Tennesse and Murfreesboro is very affordable. You can get a two bedroom one and a half bath townhome for $550 a month. A one bedroom runs $400-$500. Middle Tennessee State University is affordable as well as Tennessee State University. There is Vanderbilt University, a very well known teaching hospital in Nashville,TN. It has a children's hospital as well as the regular hospital. They offer tuition assistance and so does MTMC in Murfreesboro. I'm rambling now, so PM me for more information. We'd love to have you in the Volunteer State! :)

You can start by making a list of the schools in the state, or city you are attracted to. Most websites of the state Boards of Nursing have lists of the approved nursing programs in their state. I know, for a fact, that the Ohio BON also lists information on nursing scholarships that are available in Ohio. Anyway, at the very tip top right of this page is a button, "Links". If you run your mouse over it, a menu appears. Click on "Boards of Nursing" and you will be taken to a list of all the state boards of nursing. You can link in to the web sites of these state boards. On these websites you want to look for a link to schools of nursing or education to find these lists of schools. In many cases, there may be a link to each school's website where you can go to get information on tuition costs from their current college catalogs. This will be quite a little project for you.

I can tell you that at the community colleges of California, the tuition is only $26 a credit hour for residents (have to live here for 12 months to be a resident). However, it is well known that the cost of living is high out here, particularly in the large urban areas. Young people who work at minimum wage jobs out here live with relatives, have multiple roommates with whom they share the rent, or they rent a room from someone who has a huge house and a large monthly mortgage to meet. My sister-in-law has a home with two rental rooms in it. Both rooms are basically the size of master bedrooms, have outside entrances, and locks on the doors for the renter's privacy. Some places out here have guest houses the size of bachelor apartments on the property that rent cheap as well.

I know there are other states out there that have the same kind of tuition break as California does. I thought there was still one state that was tuition free in their state supported colleges, but I have no names to give you on that. Perhaps someone reading this knows about that.
