I graduate this month and having been applying to nursing jobs in hospital settings with no luck. I currently work as a nursing assistant in a hospital. I also have a bachelor's in another field. The nursing degree is a 2 yr degree but I plan to continue on for the bsn. Anyone willing to share their experience with finding their first nurse job?

Where do you live?
It's extremely hard to find a nursing job in a major hospital now without a BSN. It seems that once you are officially accepted into a BSN program, places are much more likely to hire you.

It took me 2 years to find a nursing job after grad. I had my BSN and I had a Bachelors in another field. Nursing schools wouldn't tell you that the job market is bleak. They want your money.

I agree. Nursing schools need to be more up-front with potential students about many different things. ADN students need to be informed about any hiring limitations in their area. Applicants should also receive accurate information about attrition rates, actual costs & conflicts of interest.... such as being forced to purchase textbooks &/or materials in which their faculty have a vested interest.

It really depends on the market and where you want to work. The majority of my class all received new grad job offers. I went to an accelerated direct entry MSN-CNL program in MO. I received 3 offers for new grad positions in SC. I accepted an offer in the stepdown unit It really depends on the market you are aiming for. However, I am from the NYC area and the market over there can be beyond brutal. Some areas do hire ADNs but it just depends where you are living.
I live in MN. We have a new program here where you get a Bachelor's degree in 3 yrs. 1.5 yrs for the 2 year degree, and then 1.5 yrs at an affiliated university for the 4 year degree. I definitely agree that if they see you are continuing on for the BSN they are more likely to hire you.

I live outside of Philadelphia, an area that is saturated with nursing schools. I, like you, graduated from an ADN program with a bachelor's in another field. I also was a nursing assistant in a hospital. The majority of my classmates, including me, found jobs within 6-9 months of graduation, many in area hospitals. I personally started my RN-BSN program right away, which I thought helped, but many of my classmates did not and they still got hired fairly easily. I think it depends on your area.

I think this absolutely depends on where you are. I'm in Nashville and just finished an Associates program. Most of my class had jobs lined up before we graduated. Some of us are doing residency programs, some are working on the unit where they have been techs, and some are working on units where we did clinicals. Our instructors are also really good about using their contacts to get students placed. Sometimes it's just about who you know.

I just graduated with an adn in Michigan. Its a great market for new grads here. I got a job a few weeks before graduation. You just have to be persistent and maybe go outside your preferred area. Im going to be driving 45 mins. to my job, and working nights.

With me being from Chicago, I haven't been able to have much luck in my local area. I had a friend that stumbled upon an opportunity in Rapid City, South Dakota that is accepting ADNs as long as the candidate is interested in pursuing their BSN. Unfortunately, I do not want to relocate at this time, but I am more than happy to pass the contact information if you'd be interested in relocating.
