Start by asking yourself the quesion, "What does it mean to be a professional nurse?" You'll probably have to look up the word "professional" in a dictionary to find the correct technical meaning. Using that correct technical meaning, think about nursing in relation to that definition. Just jot down your ideas without worrying about your grammar, etc. Then organize those ideas, grouping similar ideas together, etc. That's your paper.

You'll probably get a few responses here that will help stimulate your thinking. However, simply collecting those thoughts from other people and using them will make for a weaker paper. Those comments can though, help you get started. To do the job right, though, you'll need to go beyond that and look up what it means to be a professional.

Also go for holistic care and incorporate the nursing code of ethics in there too.

dude! the paper is supposed to be about what you think it means to be a professional nurse. do a search on the internet for the "role of the nurse". there's also information about nursing on discover nursing.com and you can go to a page of all the different nursing specialties on their site and read about what the different nurses do. http://www.discovernursing.com/ and http://stats.bls.gov/oco/ocos083.htm. read the nightengale pledge. I definitely like the role of patient advocate, check that angle out:wink2:

Write about the type of nurse you want to be. Are you going to be caring and empathetic or are you going in to get a paycheck? Also think about how you will talk to patients and their family.

It is possible to do both.

Based on my own research paper a professional nurse possesses the following qualities:

1) involvement in professional nursing organizations

2) dedication to lifelong learning - through additional schooling, continuing education, subscribing to nursing journals - reading the journal and using the knowledge gained, become certified in an area of interest

3) professional dress i.e. pressed scrubs, conservative jewlery and makeup, proper hygiene

4) setting a good example in the community - don't go to the grocery store after your shift in dirty scrubs, shoes, etc.

5) Do the right thing always!!

6) be a leader on your floor and in your hospital

7) be involved in hospital committees - advocate for change if something is not working

8) learn basic business principles - take a class in public speaking or presentation skills, how to provide excellent customer service, learn basic employment law so you cannot be intimidated or taken advantage of etc.

9) be a competent nurse - if you don't know something ask, don't try to "wing it"

10) have the highest ethical and moral standards

11) be a patient advocate at all times - this is our main job as a nurse

Hope this gives you something to think about for your paper.
