Hi I have a very important question. I have a cousin who completed her BSC Nursing in India and will be coming to the US soon, and she also will be taking the NXLEX in India offered by NCSBN. If she passes the boards and plans to work in California or any other state, will she have to retake the exam or not? What is the whole process? Thank you very much for all of the help!!! Thankxxxxxx.

What visa is she arriving to the US with? If she has passed the exam once generally she will not have to resit it again but she will have to meet the state requirements for endorsing any license she has. I presume if she is sitting NCLEX in India she has already applied to a state and met requirements?

You/your cousin will need to contact the Board of Nursing in the state in which she plans to practice. They will give you advice as to what needs to be done/obtained in order to obtain a license to practice in the US.

also, you may want to post this in the international/foreign nursing section of this site :)
I believe that there was some sort of agency, I forget the title, that your cousin will have to submit her transcripts to. This board will verify that this person has indeed graduated from a foreign nursing program and will then give an ATT number. That number is needed to register for the NCLEX.
Once your cousin passes the NCLEX and comes to America, they need to contact their individual state's BON (california) and get a license to practice in that state (just paperwork).
However, if your cousin is looking to be SPONSERED via an employer to come to this country on a work visa, things are more difficult. Fewer and fewer visas are being sponsered out to foreign nurses as part of an initiative to give out of Americans work opportunity. This came about after a large influx of nurses came from the Philippines and India.
So basically, your cousin can come here but sponsorship is difficult!
Good luck to you!
Threads merged for continuity.
Again what visa is your cousin coming to the US on?
Thank you so much for the response. But do you know approximately how long this could take? Thank you.
She's an American citizen who went to India to study nursing (Bacheors of Science). Thanks! What is just the whole process itself alone.

What visa is she coming in on and does it permit her to work?
If she is a US citizen then all she needs to do is apply to the state that she will be living and working in and meet their requirements for Foreign trained nurse, usually means involvement of CGFNS. Time frame will vary but average is 4-6 months (if NY BON then more 6-8 months) and then she will get eligibility to sit NCLEX. She can not sit NCLEX without the BON OKing her
