Need help with group project

Nursing Students Student Assist

Published

Ok, this is my second semester of nursing school and I love it! Right now one of my assignments is teaching a class about foot care to diabetics. Not hard, right? Ok, well, the clients are those of the homeless shelter. Does anyone have any great websites or info to help? Any ideas?:)

you should be able to find gobs of information doing a search for "diabetic foot care". i think one of the things you might consider is to see if there are free resources for the indigent in your area where they can get foot exams or shoes. i'm pretty sure medicare will pay for podiatry care, but then, again, an indigent person may not have medicare benefits. also, remember that if you are dealing with people who are homeless, their financial resources are nil and you cannot be sure of their educational level, so keep things simple. perhaps you could develop a one page information sheet for these patients. i did a search on medlineplus and came up with the following links. if you are going to be doing this presentation in front of your nursing class, one of your group should be the model while someone else demonstrates a foot exam on them while giving the foot care information.

you can get a copy of a patient education booklet on foot care from this site:

http://www.bphc.hrsa.gov/leap/instructionalinformation.htm just click on "patient instruction booklet". i'm a big used of cut and paste clipart and there are some nice simple pictures here you can incorporate into a teaching tool you might want to make yourself.

http://www.diabetes.org/type-2-diabetes/foot-care.jsp - foot care for diabetics from the american diabetes association. here is a page from their site on foot complications http://www.diabetes.org/for-parents-and-kids/what-is-diabetes/foot-complications.jsp

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/tutorials/diabetesfootcare/htm/index.htm - this is an interactive tutorial from medline plus on diabetes foot care. i looked at the text pdf file (i have a dial-up and it takes forever for the videos to load!). it had some nice color pictures on the 5 page text. it talksa about how diabetes affects the feet, how to prevent foot problems, daily and regular foot care, shoes and preventing injuries.

http://ndep.nih.gov/campaigns/feet/feet_overview.htm - here is more good info from the national diabetes education program. this information is designed for lay public.

http://familydoctor.org/352.xml - there is a section on this site about choosing the right shoes

http://www.healthyroadsmedia.org/list/engdiaftpr.htm - this is a 2-minute video from health roads media called "how can diabetes hurt my feet?" here is the written version: http://www.healthyroadsmedia.org/files/pdf/endiaftpr.pdf

http://www.healthyroadsmedia.org/files/pdf/engdiaft.pdf - is a printable one sheet text version of their little presentation on "diabetes - what can i do to take care of my feet?" these are also available in spanish.

http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/complications_feet/ - this site is from the national diabetes information clearinghouse on "prevent diabetes problems: keep your feet and skin healthy".

thanks! you are soooo awesome! You have helped me out tremendously!
