Hi everyone,
I failed NC 5 a few months back and have it scheduled for the 1st week in August. As I flip through the material, I realize that this is my hardest subject (instead of cardiology like I thought). Anyway, I have the books and have glanced at the chapters again but I don't seem to take in the info. Yes, I know I need to study more but the material just doesn't make sense to me. I personally think that this test should be split into TWO because it's full of info on so many different subjects~ from mental illness to kidney function.
Aside from the recommended texts and study guide, did you use anything else to help you absorb the info? Any helpful books ou there? Thanks.

Did you take the EC practice exams?
Yes, I took the practice exams and got a 46 on the 1st try and a 52 the 2nd try. All my other exams haven't been THIS hard for me and I usually score in the upper 60's and 70's on the practice exams.

Study the information asked on the practice exams. This will give you an idea of what information will be on the exam. Also, use the Excelsior Study Guide and the practice examinations in the back.
I have also found that my Saunders NCLEX book helped me studying for all the nursing theory exams. Read the chapters that are appropriate for the information on Exam 5 from the Saunders or Mosby NCLEX book.
Another would be the Kozier Fundamental book. You can go on the discussion boards too and they will have a chat and/or chat transcripts on exam 5. Also, use the Electronic Peer Network (EPN).
Keep on studying and you will get pass this exam.

Change,
What are you using to study? I too failed HD2. What I did was went back over the practice test and studied the rationals. I made sure I knew all the diseases or disorders, Signs and Symptoms and nursing intervention. I used TCN and Chancellors, Lisa Arends and some of Study group 101. I know it was alot of sources but I was desperate!

HD2 or NC5 is my next exam I test on, I see that people are failing this exam. Why is this exam so difficult?
Psych was one of my favorite subjects in LPN school, I actually did very well in the class, I was just planning on taking the practice exams and studying meds (because psych meds are forever changing).
What do you guys who've taken it and failed thought about the exam? What was the most difficult part?

It wasn't the psych that messed me up, it was the metabolic system and regulatory system. I could not grasp all the hypo and hyper hypothyroidism stuff and all the diabetic stuff. I did fine in the psych.
The second time I studied the two sections I did the worse in and briefly went back over the psych and came out on top. You will definetly see the difficulty when you start the material.
I was also going to suggest StudyGroup101 and Lisa Arends ... only Lisa Arends had materials available when I was doing NC5 (SG101 only had up through NC4 at the time), but both are usually pretty helpful for key points. I also used a Chancellor's guide for NC5 ... I thought it really nailed the content. If I had to pick just one of those supplementals ... probably SG101. :)
The hardest part to me was not the psych like others said.. instead it was the other stuff.. The questions it asked about some of the diseases were like whaaaaaaaat? I don't remember the test since it was in Feb but I do remember thinking that I didn't know 70% of what they were asking and guessing wasn't easy.. It was more like a pathophysiology exam IMO.

My friend Just took this one the other day and she said it felt like they asked her alot WHAT questions as well. She had problems in Psych. Some one we knew who already took the test and passed with a A, told us to groUp the disorders together IE: study the hyperthyroid and hypothyroid together get them down then move on. Write everything you know about them on a piece of paper after you think you have them down etc. Anything you dont understand about them use the good old WWW. That is what I do and i think it helps. I dont know if that works but it helped her. She got a 82 on that portion of the test. I told her to use SG101 and the Psych book that EC recomends. I hope you do well on the test. You can do it We are all behind you.~ Kallie

Respiratory Opposite - Metabolic Equal
When respiratory the numbers go opposite and metabolic they go same way. Now this is not taking in account when the body goes in compensatory mode, but this is the basics you need to know.
