Native American Reservations?

I do know here in Canada if you are a regisered staus indian the band will pay for your education but like the army, you have to work on a reservation for a period of time to give back to their community.

I also would like to look into this but don't know how, what, or who to contact about it. Does anyone have an address, phone #, web site or anything to get info on local reservations? I know there are a couple in the area but have not a clue where a clinic or whatever would be for them.

First, determine which area... :chuckle ...then do to the blue government pages in the phone book and look up Indian Affairs or whatever its called where you are. They should be able to give you a list of clinics on the reservations.

For the past five years I have been going to a native american (Lakota) res in South Dakota called Rosebud. The people there are very poor, but open to people coming in to help them. They have a local clinic in Mission, South Dakota and a hospital as well. However, the people have no way to get to the clinics and I notice especially the dental care is very very bad. I see there is a nurse practitioner in Mission who sees patients, but I wish there were some way to transport people. I would contact (on any res) the tribe (because they have the authority on the res). YOu could do this via website, for example, do a search on the internet ex. "Lakota reservations" or whatever tribe you are interested in. HOpe this helps. :)

Are there any of you working on a reservation? Could you tell me more about it if you do? I found out through my school that there is a scholarship for people who are willing to work in health care on a reservation and it is something that always appealed to me. Thanks! :)

I am an Anishinaabe giigoonkwe, (Chippewa fish clan woman) but I am also mixed cultured and urban born and live acculturated, (not assimilated) and do not participate tribally as I am from Chicago.

However, I have a great interest in working for the IHS, the Indian Health service. If you go to their website, (a google search will get you there) then look at nursing recruitment and then to regional directors you can email or call them or write them.

I am not sure where the nearest site is to your current location but they do have a loan repayment program. You can only get the scholarships IF you are a registered tribal member but the loan repayment is for all Nurses that they agree to.

Also, there may be locations closer to your home state, not sure.

Im doing a travel assignment at an IHS hospital in Claremore ok, this is my 3rd assignment there, have worked ER and Icu, pretty easy money compared to the private sector. here there isnt Indian preference in er or icu but in other areas there is. er is somewhat like a lg clinic but every once in a while a trauma shows up and we have to ship. many travel agencies contract with IHS.

*some* Tribes choose to hire directly or have Tribal Hire Choice, rare though. It is easy to notice this through scrolling through the jobs at the IHS website. It will list either nothing or "Tribal Hire" after the position.

Oh, what a total bummer to know, (as a mixed cultured person) that the IHS is going 'rental' and hiring the travel coporations rather than the nurses direct.

I would imagine that it is both, the Nurses and the Tribal Nations that are getting the shaft in that deal.

Hi "rental" here! I'm one of those travelers who does contracts on the reservations - and I don't think they are getting such a bad deal with me or many others like me. Most of the contracts are done because they are critically understaffed and need someone right now (I've seen units closed down temporarily for lack of nurses). Believe me - if they could get enough permanent employees they wouldn't be paying agencies.

I've got a little different perspective on this as I worked for the IHS in AZ and NM for 9 yrs. before becoming a traveler. Now when I go back it's to enjoy the area and reconnect with old friends out there.

On a side note, I ran across a kiosk at a conference a couple years back and thought to myself, "what's the Navy doing here?"

As I walked up, I realized it wasn't the Navy at all. It was a guy in uniform, and I really don't remember the details, but gist was this: apparently the Bureau or IHS is a small branch of the military. Like the military, one can be either enlisted/commissioned or civilian contracted.

It was quite interesting. Surf those sites and I'm sure the info is there, albeit a lot of stuff to surf. I do remember he said the PT requirements were downright lax, but a BS degree was needed to be military and ADN's could do civilian contract employment.
