My significant other

Hello.. my boyfriend and I have been together for some time already. I am planning on working in the US and dont have any relatives there. My boyriend and I are planning to get married so I can hopefully bring him with me.

1. Should we get married before I start processing papers? (so that my family name will be in order already)

2. Is it possible to hold it off till after I finish taking the NCLEX exam and pass it hopefully. (best option since were not "ready" yet)

If we get married, I believe that the employer would try to get visas for both of us. Am i correct in assuming this?

Point is really, I just dont want to be alone when I go there and I dont have anyone to accompany me besides him.

Lastly, someone told me that theres this law where you have to work for 2yrs locally(Philippines) before you can even start to apply for work outside. I dont believe this tho..

Tnx for taking the time.. God Bless

Yes, you should if he is the one...

This has a lot of benefits, than petitioning him after your papers have been completed...This will save you the needless wait, because he will also get his visa approved the moment your visa is approved...The LATEst time or "deadline" that is allotted you to have less/no hassles, in my opinion(at least from one of the consultants in immigration in a seminar that I attended)is before packet 3...this means, the LATEst time that you should marry should be on packet 2...The sooner the better, hehe... Sure, the important thing is that I strongly advice, is before your employer starts your petition/petitioning you...yes, but most employers will not shoulder the expenses for your significant other...So try to ask them(your employers/agency)about this specifically...

Don't believe that such law exists. Only the nclex-rn license(valid visa implied)is required for anyone to practice nursing legally in the USA.

Experience is for your own "safety/confidence", considering that you will practice abroad...It is strongly advised to have experience though...The longer the better. You can do this(I suggest) after you finish all the required exams and just waiting for your visa interview.

It is a different story for UK though, they really require experience, I think the most recent is 6 MONTHS ONGOING HOSPITAL WORK...But the bright side is, NO NURSING EXAMS for nurses licensed in their respective country of origin. you only have to get NMC approval(included license validation plus fees), IELTS academic band(I'm not sure about the latest passing score needed), and an "adaptation time/period" of work wherein you will be supervised for a period of 3 to 6 months I guess, most employers would not sponsor this, hehe, so you have to pay for all the costs and expenses that you will incur in the duration of this adaptation period...

God bless! Hehe, I am happy for you...

Tnx so much john83! That really helped. I guess we'll marry after I pass the NCLEX hopefully. Expenses for his side shouldnt be too much of a problem.

Last thing to clarify is, since I will have taken the exam before I get married, wont I have to make adjustments to my license/credentials since I will be using his family name after?

just notify the BON for any changes

You're welcome Galathea! Hehe, well, that is why allnurses.com forum is here, to help people, especially nurses...

That is good...Best wishes and God bless on your exams and your future married life...:-)

Please contact the board of nursing where you applied for nclex-rn, the cgfns(for your visascreen), and pearsonvue(after you contacted the BON). Some BONs have forms that needs to be filled up and submitted for changes to your information/status...;-)

It is best safe to have all the changes relayed to all who are involved in your application...;-)
