My disclaimer- I'm a student and have never worked at either. However I have had family have surgery at both institutions. I was personally more impressed with the organization at UH rather than the Clinic. The clinic is GREAT, however they have so so many openings for nursing right now (somewhere b/n 200-300 positions) that I don't think it's as "well-oiled" as it should be. The research/innovation there is incredible, but organization doesn't seem to be the clinic's strength. THat is from a patient/family perspective, couldn't tell you about employee perspective! Hope you like it out here....depending on where you live too, there are a lot of satellite hospitals for both institutions, that may help you avoid the traffic! Best wishes!
I've worked for both places..... they are both good facilities - teaching hospitals.....
Ummmm it seems - to me at least - that UH is more oriented toward the patient and their families.... whereas the clinic is more about learning and research.
The clinic has an easier electronic MAR. It is more user friendly.
CCF - I've worked at the clinic's mothership (downtown) and some of the family health centers, and done clinicals at some it's area hospitals. It's a good company to work for..... lots of learning opportunities, good reputation...... but it also comes with lots of politics, passing of the buck w/ certain managers - too many chiefs, not enough indians mentality... and not very personal when it come to dynamics with most people there.
UH - I've also worked at the downtown location and some smaller hospitals.... they are more personalized when it comes to dealing with families and patients, and even with employee / manager relationships.... It seems that you get more recognition for doing a good job there, it's more like a family atmosphere.... It did seem that the equipment, ie: computor programs, was a little more cumbersome though......
I would honestly recommend both - they are both great companies to work for. Make sure to shadow whatever positions you apply for - during the shift that you would be working - that is truely the only way to see the actual dynamics between the employees and managers there.
This is just my personal opinion..... you can do with it, what you want! I've personally moved on to a private hospital on the west side, and so far - I absolutely love it!! Smaller, but more family like.

Just wanted to add my two-cents in regarding all the openings at CCF... we are getting ready to open an additional 400some beds at the hospital, and need to have the RN's to staff them.... True, that there is a lot of turnover with staff, but I think that is the same with any huge teaching hospital.
Don't know if this helps as I am only going by gossip, but I work for an Akron hospital 50 or so miles to the south of Cleveland. We get frequent nurses applying for positions who have fled the CCF main campus with horror stories about patient load, nursing rights, doctor attitudes. I have only met one nurse who applied here from UH and they did so for the commute (they lived in Akron). After 3mos they returned to UH. CCF is known to be a "doctors' hospital" where as UH has a reputation of having a strong nursing department. Keep in mind I'm just passing gossip- no first hand experience.
I doubt Huron will be a Level one....they don't have all the components for it.
As for CCF....the ones we got didn't say anything about people being nasty, they didn't like the way they were treated by docs and the ratios were bad. Usually, if you have a mass exit like that, it isn't something like nurses picking on one another, it goes deeper than that.

I am an RN, working in the operating room. I am planning to move to Cleveland the beginning of 2008. Are the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospital the only places to work? Any advice on which is better?
