Hi Everybody,
I was wondering if anybody would give me a little information on moving and working in Brisbane. I have one year post nursing qualification experience and hope to visit Brisbane next year on a working visa with my partner.
I was originally hoping to work in New Zealand for a year but after reading other people opinions i have been put off due to the cost of living. Could anybody please give me a little info on the cost of living in Brisbane ie rental prices etc. I am quite flexible as to where abouts in Austrailia i would like to stay but would prefer Brisbane.
Any info would be a great help!!!
Thanks :loveya:

Hi Shugs (cute name),
Not sure, what country you are coming from? I know several nurses who have joined a nursing agency and travelled around Australia. I think if you are on this site, this is a good starting block as you can chat with others and get some general feed back. If you google nursing in Australia you will get several Nursing Agencies. Or if you google some of the big hospital names - maybe you can be hired directly.
Royal Brisbane Hospital (900 beds) - it is one of the largest public hospital hence its name, located near one of the Universities so many students living in around the suburbs of Herston, Windsor, Kelvin Grove, Lutwyche, Springhill all very accessible to the hospital. I suggest you look at http://www.realestate.com.au (rentals, or rent a room, buying a house etc. I think if you http://www.rentaroom.com.au (I think that web site works).
Another large teaching hospital is Princess Alexandra (approx 800 beds) - public hospital located around suburbs Wooloongabba, Kangaroo Point, Greenslopes.
You have another teaching hospital called Prince Charles Hospital (known for Cardiac) (approx 700 -800 beds) located in Suburbs Chermside, Wavell Heights.
Private hospitals - where the nurse has to more problem solving and only liase with Consultants is The Wesley Hospital (452 beds) located in Auchenflower, Greenslopes Hospital (approx 500 beds), Mater Private Hospital.
I hope this helps you a bit in your search.
Goodluck

Hi Shugs,
I was working for a nursing agency while I was in Brisbane. You can PM me if you like if you want to talk to them. I have had no problems, and this lady was very nice and helpful. just to give you an idea how much rent is, I was living in the city centre close to the train stations, close to the mall, china town, walking distance to St Andrews Hospital, also close to the river!!, in an apartment complex called "The Hub" The location is actually beaut!! close to everything! and i was paying $420/per week for fully furnished 1 bedroom apartment@! very modern, and very nice. I know it is alot but if you are willing to live out, it is ofcourse way cheaper...

Can you suggest of a place even in the suburbs that would be appropriate for a famil with 3 kids (7,5,and 3).
Any area with a good school that you can recommend?

I stayed a couple months in Redcliffe - a small peninsular area 45/60mins north of Brissy - far enough out of it to be quiet suburbia - but easy accessible by multi-means - trains are good from Sandgate (if I remember rightly). Road traffic is a nightmare tho peak hours - but that's anywhere in Brissy I think.

Where you live depends pretty much on where you want to work - it's a big place and you don't want to have an hour + commute each way.

I'm set to move this month to Brisbane particularly working with Mater Health Services in South Brisbane... I'm quite excited to experience this new chapter of employment but I'm looking forward to settle down in Australia for good if it's a great place for me...
Anybody here have been working or friends working in Mater? Can I have some expectations for Brisbane in general too?
Thanks!!!

My old housemate worked at Mater Private...she said they had to organise all the blood tests, write up requests for imaging etc etc, and ring the consultants.
Mater is quite good. And you get the benefit of it being a 'private' hospital, its owned by the Sisters of Mercy and so you get a higher salary sacrifice thing, but its like a public hospital coz the mater rents out beds to Qld Health...well thats what i was told.
dont go to St Andrews......
Hm for working at the Wesley, Indooroopilly, Toowong, Auchenflower, Milton, ah Kenmore, Moggill.....
