how many of you that went from working as an rn in a hospital setting then moved into information systems missed the hospital hustle and bustle and considered going back? sometimes i feel that i'm not using as much of my nursing education and experience that i worked so hard to obtain. has anyone else here dealt with those same feelings?

I haven't really missed bedside nursing. I still do work occasionally work on the floor, it just reminds me of why I wanted to leave bedside nursing.

i did initially miss clinical practice so i maintain my nursing skills by practicing clinically part-time.
continuing to practice reminds me why i entered nursing in the first place, gives me an appreciate for the bedside nurse and the overwhelming tasks she has to contend with on a daily basis and keeps me empathetic to the clinicians i work with in my informatics practice.
i try to remember (no matter my level of informatics expertise) that if it wasnt for the patients, nurses and other clinicians i would not be needed............i wouldnt have a job. my ultimate purpose is to facilitate and improve clinical practice and patient care. as informaticists we need to maintain a balance between our role as clinical practitioners and our role as "techies"..............i will always be "a nurse" and hold nurses and nursing in high regard!!!!!

Honestly, I don't miss Nursing - I do occasionally miss patient care. I love what I do now and would not return to the bedside unless I had no other choice. I guess for me - being a nurse in a hospital IT dept brings a level of respect and professionalism that I just never experienced at the bedside.
