Hey there, I'm about to apply in January for the Holmes CC LPN and RN program in Ridgeland. I'm posting this because I have a few concerns. I talked with a Nurse instructor who informed me that they mainly look at ACT scores. My ACT is a 19, I've taken it three times, it's not going up. (Unless anyone has a suggestion for what to do) I don't beleive ACT is a good deciding factor being that not everyone is good at standardized tests. ANYWAY. My concern is that I may not be able to get into the RN program...ever. So I was thinking about the LPN to RN transition. Do you HAVE to work after you receive LPN license? I just want to graduate, then go straight into RN.

Yes I do have a few concerns that have been floating in my head lately. I had this nursing student telling me about the program and I asked if I'd be able to join and she said, "Guys can't be nurses, it's a female job." I replied, "Nurses help people; why is that something only women can do?", so I'm just worried I won't get in because of that. I also am jittery about sticking needles into veins, I don't faint, get nauseated, or dizzy, just jittery. Is this something that goes away? I really am determined. I've been studying all year, fundamntals, skills, dosage calculations, learning whatever I can to help me become the best nurse possible. I mean are there stories where people apply for like 5 years and more and never get in? I just don't want to end up like that. Oh and there are no waiting list. So any help would be h good, thanks!

I'm applying the fall 2010. Taken most classes needed for any degree. ENG ! and II, College Algebra, Speech, History, Music, Sociology, Psychology, Biology, and now AP I and II. I have 19 ACT, and 3.0 GPA, So I hope my chances will be alright.

I don't see why you wouldn't do RN? LPN's are becoming harder to find jobs. My mom is a Nurse manager over at St. Dominics and I told her about this LPN-to-RN transition thing and she told me, "No, no way in hell your going to do that. It's not the same education. I won't let you do that. Either RN or no nurse." So RN it is for me then!

I was applying to the one at Ridgeland. I haven't yet and the only reason is because I doubt myself. Mom is a nurse and said there is no waiting list and that I could probably get in first try. (mom is a nurse too). Counselor told me the courses that I have already taken will definitely look good. She said most ppl only have A&P I and II. Plus I'm a male, 20. Not sure if that will help but what do you suggest?

Was it hard for you to get in at all? I heard it was competitive. But what happens if I keep applying year after year and never get into a nursing program. Am I supposed to just keep working the bad jobs and still apply?

I have 3.0 gpa, and 19 ACT, taken it 3 times didn't go up so its staying at 19. I already attend holmes just to get pre reqs. So what happens when I keep applying every year and never get in?

Is the HINDS program really as bad as everyone makes it out to be? Its the only 2 year program around my area and I'm skeptical about what I hear. I heard about the failing rate and the newspaper article about hinds. thanks for any input

Aww this was a tremendous story. I felt the emotions, the anxiousness, it was all like a bitter sweet movie playing in my head. My mother passed hers first time as well as everyone else I know. I think this is why I think I will pass as well.

ehh, nursing isn't for you.. how about english professor? haha

Congrats! however you won't make much being LVN/LPN, many hospitals are either replacing with RN or just letting them go.

She probably isn't going by the book much. When your in a hospital, i'm sure they all don't go by the book. She's just giving you pointers that will better help your career. Don't think of this as school! It's job training pretty much, enjoy it and learn all you can. It'll carry with you the rest of your life. Good lucky you'll do great.

Before I can enter the program I have to of taken A and P I and II and Intro to sociology. Why? i don't have a clue. I'm taking A and P I right now. In january I will take A and P II and then go on to nursing school that fall.

Thanks this gave me hope. I feel much better now. I know there will be some form of stress, but everyone just makes it seem scary, etc. Well i'll still quit my job anyway, I hate it it. If this is going to be my career I want to learn everything and not just skimp by like in high school.
