Hey you guys, hope all is well. Question, I am on the wait list at HFCC, and was wondering if there was any type of medical math class I can sign up for. Wayne County has HSC 100, medical measurements and mathematics. Doesn't hfcc offer anything similar, or am I overlooking it? Actually I found the nursing 095 class, can you take that while your waiting to enter the nursing program or do you have to take it with your nursing courses.

Hello! The only math class i know they have at hfcc is MATH 101 called math for health careers. I think math 095 is for people who are in the nursing program.

Once you get in the program , the focus 2 weeks on math and you have to buy a book for it. Then you have to take a test and if you fail 2 times you're out of the program.
It's not a hard test, but they'll give you a bunch of rules that are annoying to remember. I really don't think you'll need an additional math class, but that's up to you.
Thanks for the feedback. I'm a little nervous when it comes to math. The dosage calculations seem so difficult to me, but I again, I appreciate the feedback. I hope 2 weeks is enough time to soak it all in. Still thinking about taking the math at wccc just for reinforcements. What do you think about taking med terminology?
I'm only first yr at HFCC, but we do have a med terminology packet we must study for every fundamentals test. It couldn't hurt you, but if I were really trying to get a leg up, I'd take a pathophysiology class.
Also, pharm is a prereq as I'm sure you know, but you will be required to take online pharm tests once you're in the program and then there's one big final test that you get 2 chances to pass or you're out. They never tell you these things until you're already in the program.
I honestly feel you'll do fine with the math. They really want you to pass so they go over it thoroughly and give you as many practice questions and practice tests as you'd like.

Thanks, I feel reassured by your comments. Maybe I will look into patho, yeah I plan on taking pharm in the spring. Good luck to you!
Oh, Im sorry, one more thing. What type of score do we need to past these tests, say dosage calc?

My school's website had a wonderful review site with explanations, formulas, and lots of practice questions and answers. We have to pass a math final at the end of every semester with at least an 80%. After working through all these problems I was able to get a 100% last week.
Here's the website: http://www3.delta.edu/tlc/TLCStudySupport/Math%20for%20Nursing%20and%20Allied%20Health.PDF
Good Luck!

Follow what your mind tells you, for you know your strengths and weaknesses. Math is a huge component in nursing and so is knowing your terminology. The more you know the better. If math is not a strong suite for you, i would definitely say take the course at WC3D in the meantime. It will help your understanding and get you prepared. I wish i took terminology before entering the program...it would've helped me in clinicals and to correctly answer a few terminology based test questions in some of my previous classes also :)

If you can get in then you have to take hsc 100 at wcccd even if you arent going to attend their program. Only take Diedo, she is amazing and teaches so well. I started out not too good in math but now I have never missed a math question since her class. Titration... No Problem =)

The math book you can buy is by Curren. Here is a link I found on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Math-Meds-Iml-9e-Curren/dp/1401832822/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231878490&sr=1-3
The first semester test is ratio & proportion. 2nd semester is still alot of that and IV calculations (drop factors and such). It is fairly easy & they WILL go over it with you. Good luck! :) You need to pass with a 90%.
It doesn't hurt to take medical terminology. I took it. It was pretty easy & I am glad I did. But if you don't have time or feel you can soak it up in the packet they give you, don't bother.
