Malpractice Insurance?

Hi, :) Ive been in a LPN for about 1.5 years now. I don't have malpractice insurance. I have read a couple of threads on here about people having problems at their workplace and people always say to contact their malpractice insurance..so, I'm guessing its a good idea to get malpractice insurance if I ever get into a rough situation? My question is, where do I get malpractice insurance? I live in NYC, I'm a LPN..Im also in school for my RN. How long does malpractice insurance last? Is it like car insurance where you pay every year or something? Im sorry Im totally clueless when it comes to this. And Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your time.

Yes in general you pay yearly. I personally have NSO malpractice insurance. It's good have people on your side lol. You may be able to buy the student insurance but not sure since you currently practice on your LPN license..

One company that lots of nurses use is Nursing Service Organization (NSO). The policy is good for a year & you pay for the full year all at once. It's not expensive. I just renewed mine & paid $108 for 1 year of coverage. I think it's more expensive if you work in OB.

It's important to have your own malpractice insurance. Not only does it cover you if something happens on the job but if your license is ever investigated, it provides you with legal representation. I graduated in 1978 and we were told almost from day 1 in school we needed to have our own malpractice insurance. I have never let mine lapse in 36 years.

a quick web search will give you more than enough options to let you get malpractice ins. I found the product offered through my state professional organization to be a bit pricey. I ended up adding it on to my homeowners ins as a professional liability rider. It was SUPER CHEAP- like $40/half, and it offers a fair amount of coverage.

Thank you all for your responses! I will definitely look into the NSO that you guys mentioned. Is malpractice insurance buyable online? Or do I have to go somewhere to get it

With NSO it can all be done online. You fill out an application & pay and about 2 days later they email your certificate of insurance.
