I'm starting my first nursing job in 2 weeks and have heard a lot of different opinions on carrying malpractice insurance. I am working for a large hospital system, so I am covered by them; however, I have heard from some people that if you and the hospital are both named in a lawsuit, the hospital may throw you under the bus to save themselves some money. In these cases, it would be helpful if the nurse has his/her own malpractice insurance.
Most people have said carrying individual malpractice insurance is unnecessary, but some say to do it. What do you all think?
(Note: I'm not planning on having to use it anytime soon, just want to be on the safe side!!)

My husband has his own insurance. It's a rider on our homeowner's insurance. It's not too expensive. Go for it.

I just bought mine through NSO.com. There's a huge thread on this subject on allnurses.com.
I will say though, that I felt so much better once I had purchased it though...(I'm a new grad as well fyi)

Do it! Better safe then sorry. I am going to get some today. It is a resonable price to pay for what you get if something happens.

Less than $100/year for a good nights sleep. I don't plan on using mine either, I don't think anyone does, but in the sue, get a quick buck, society that we live in it is good just to have in your back pocket.

Haha, well looks like there's not much of a debate on this topic. Thanks for the advice, y'all!
