MA School Nurses- Question

Regarding Delegation for Administration of Medications by others

Have you gone through the steps to be able to delegate to others to give meds in your absence? I have read through the policy a zillion times and seems like a royal PITA- that two day training in Marlborough, the application, the paperwork, etc. If you have NOT delegated, what is your procedure when you are out if you don't have a RN substitute to cover?

Thanks!

I have heard of the principal having spare key to the medicine cabinet, or if not, possibly a secretary.

Principal is my back-up if I cannot get an RN to cover. But for scheduled medications only - never PRNs or OTCs. I have a procedure written up in my sub folder.

And just an FYI: You have to attend this training if you want to be a certified DESE school nurse in MA. It's a great training! I've gone and then you have to go every five years. There is paperwork; it's pretty simple, but you have to request the paperwork and it needs to be signed off by the school nurse AND the school physician. I'm happy to talk via PM and/or email - I know MA procedure ;).

Awesome, thanks! I'll definitely touch base about this. I still need to take the MTEL Communication and Literacy test too if I want to do the DESE thing  I'd have to pay and do it in my own time which kinda blows.

I've signed up for mine in two weeks! But my school will reimburse me after I pass, which is awesome.
