I know most of us nurses dont even know what a lunch break is...but i try to eat and run (that is why i eat so fast)..What is a good snack or meal that helps you w/ hunger and also helps keep you going??? I have heard protein bars help with this...any suggestions?

When I'm working I have a glass of milk with or without a Go Tart, which gets me through to lunch. Lunch often isn't until 2 or 3 because of the midday rush (I work ER) and that is usually enough until the next morning. Lunch is often eaten cold or on the run, at the desk. Once a local cop took a suspect to county jail an hour away, where there is also an In 'N Out. He brought back a whole box of burgers for other officers and the ER nurses. Of course they were cold by then but we're so used to eating cold food we didn't care.

A hard-boiled egg. If you peel it in the morning before you go to work and wrap it in a damp paper towel, it's easy to eat on the run, and it's a nice hit of protein.

:), food, what is that? Just kidding, I try to pack something so I have food when I have time to eat it as the cafeteria is not open 24/7. I eat before coming to work, high protein meal with a little bit of fat and some fiber. I go light on the veggies as they give me gas and cramping. Dried fruit is an awesome snack as is a piece of jerky (I make my own). I drink lots of water too. I find I start to get a bit crabby after about 6 hours and no food break.
You know what's kind of awesome? On the floor where I'm precepting right now, not only do the nurses take a FULL hour lunch break (and occasionally more), they also take a half-hour breakfast break. And no one ever has to restrain their bladders. It kind of freaks me out. That's more breaks than I ever had in a desk job!

My favorite snack on the run are Luna Bars. Nuts over chocolate are my favorite. They are packed with protein and are made from soy nuts. They ususally get me through the day.
I like the peanut butter ones.

In clinicals, we just started taking 4 patients. I am learning that I can't eat, drink, pee, or sit for hours. Water and a protein bar are lifesavers. If I don't have anything, I make more mistakes at the end of the shift.

peanut butter toast/english muffin
AND
milk
OR
yogurt with fruit in it (think yoplait).
usually a combination of those will hold me.
when i worked on the floor i was lucky to get 20 minutes to wolf down a 6 inch subway sandwich or a bag of chips. the vending machine is your best friend and worst enemy.

Not on m/s, in a NICU. It's a lot easier to take a break when the nurse: pt ratio is around 1:2...
And in NYC
