Today, I was in the financial aid office, and the lady told me Florida would not be hiring any Lpns next year. I just about fell off my chair, because I'm waiting to hear back, I just applied to the program. She told me hospitals were fazing them out by next year. I have read some of the threads on this, it seems to go all over the place. Anyways, now I'm a little nervous, know I shouldn't be, but I had a plan all layed out and wonder what the future will be when I am finished. I just think it's crazy that a financial aid lady would be telling a student this. I hope this is wrong, I will need to work when I am through and doing my pre reqs for the bridge program.

Well, in 2006 in my hospital, they do not hire LPN's anymore, except for the ER which they only pay them $13/hr. The LPN's that work on the floors have been there for years. and I hear that little by little hospitals stop hiring LPNs.
You should be thankful that the financial aid lady was honest with you.
You will be an LPN and you will get a job, maybe not at a hospital but a nursing home or doing home health.
your right, I am thankful she said something, but she did make it sound like it wasn't just hospitals. I even asked, "nursing homes", and she thought so. Why is it that there is such a shortage of nurses in this state, but it so difficult to get in the programs. I have been checking into the programs and some only accept 12 students once a year. thank you for the response, like you said, "I will find a job", and hopefully, work my way through the rn program.

I have also heard this rumour. Howver,it is highly doubtful that LPNs will be phased out of Nursing Homes and Home Health. Nursing home care is expensive enough, I can not forsee where they would only hire RNs as this would surly drive the cost further up.
I do believe that most hospitals will phase out LPNs, however, they pay the least of all the places that LPNs can work anyway eg nursing home, agency, home health.
IMO, it is only advisable to go to LPN school if one has it as a goal to also get a ADN with a RN designation in 4yrs or so.
I was thinking the same thing, just wanted to get advice from others. Hoping and praying my score was good enough to get into the Jan. program.
I agree with NewgoalRn,
LPN is good if you want to keep going to school and as a stepping stone to RN.
I do not know of other hospitals and LPN's but I know 100% that LPN's only get paid $13/hr here in miami in my hospital. and the RN's start at $22.52/hr

They will never be able to phase out LPN's completely. The nursing homes, and dr's office's need them. I know in the bay area a lot of hospitals don't hire LPN's either I don't know what there deal is. I know when I applied to one of the hospitals in the Tampa bay area I never received a phone call back as an LPN. Since I have graduated from RN school I have two interviews in the next two weeks at a major hospital. I think these hospitals need to hire LPN's to help with the shortage, because it is only going to get worse.

In plant city, my friend works at the hospital and makes $19 as a LPN with one year exp.
It is a bit far from Tampa but $19 is not bad for passing out meds which is what she does!

i am a new grad practical nurse (waiting to take boards) who is moving to florida in the spring. i have contacted a hospital on the treasure coast for a job as a LPN and have an interview scheduled on a step-down unit in january. there are still hospitals that hire LPN's.
I know several people who work as LPNs in nurinsing home. I know someone in Broward County where you are Bumblebee who makes around $20/hr and I have a classmate who works as a LPN in a nursing home in St.Pete or Tampa( i have to ask her which ) and she makes $19/20 /hr. It seems that they can range at $15-$17/hr but with shift differentials get it up to $19/$20.
Also, after 1 yr experience, u can work the agency and make $25-$80 a case going to homes and doing accucheks, giving insulin, wound care , etc

I've been hearing that alot too... that LPN's are being phased out... I guess that's part of the reason that I want to go back for my RN. Well, that, and even though I don't think I will go anywhere else, I want the opportunity to look elsewhere instead of nursing home, KWIM?
