I am a new LPN and I work at a LTC facility. My dream is to be in the OR and am trying to find a way to get there. I do want to become an RN one day but only if it helps me get in the OR. If I was able to get in and work without my RN that would be great. I am having trouble though finding a way to get in. I have heard of rumors of preceptor programs out there but can't find one. I live in Nashville and do know that Vanderbilt does have an internship for LPN to Surgical Technologist periodically. Does anyone know a good way to get in the OR?

You could work on getting your RN and then becoming an OR nurse...
That would probably require you to work in a hospital setting for a period of time and then transfer to the OR.
Maybe you could try getting a job at a hospital now while you work on your RN?

I'm also an LPN here in Nashville, and I would definitely try for the Tech internship with Vanderbilt. I've seen that posted now and then.. and drool a little.
I love Emergency.. so I'm studying for an RN program while I'm at home with children, and volunteering in their ED. One. Step. At. A. Time. :)
Good luck!

Where I work they hire new RNs into the OR. It is a speciality and the hospital will train you to do the job. I work in periop, but Im a prep nurse. I couldnt take an on call job due to my family situation so I had to turn down the OR position I was offered (circulating nurse) . I am in the department, so my foot is in the door. Maybe one day I will be in the OR, and so may you. I dont know how the LPN to surgical tech school works, just do your research. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!
