Low GPA...

Published

Hi Everyone..

I have a question.. Basically I didn't do what I was supposed to do in High school and graduated with (1.92 GPA.) Fast forward many years I would like to become a nurse. I'm a Army wife and we have a little girl (3) I want to be a good example for. My question.. Is there anything I can do at this stage of the game to help myself get out of this mess I have gotten into? I looked on the NVCC web, site Nursing programs and they want a 2.75 GPA for one of their programs.

Thanks for the help...

Does the program have pre-reqs? You could take those to boost your gpa. I think most CC have an open door policy which means everyone gets a chance.

Well the good news is that, I'm pretty sure that there will be classes you need to take before you can apply for the nursing program you are interested in. If you do well in them, then you will make yourself a competitive candidate. Most nursing schools require that you take a number of science classes and some general ed classes before applying. Also, I'd shoot for a GPA that is well over the minimum that they say. Most people applying to programs these days are well above the minimum. You are competing with a whole lot of people for just a few spots so you want to make yourself as competitive as possible. These days, its really hard to get into most programs with a 2.75 GPA. Good luck!

while you do your pre reqs just take them real serious shoot for all A'S and you should be just fine.

Is that your high school GPA? My community college does not even look at that. They only count college courses.

Your high school gpa will not matter. Like the previous posters suggest, take pre reqs for your ADN or BSN and ace them with A's. You can do anything you set your mind to. "I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me." Phillipians 4:13.

You messed up, but it's high school and after you knock out your prereqs no one will care about how ya did back then (ok there are some schools that still want HS transcripts, just like there are some that want ACT scores, but those are exceptions and not the rule (and I am thankful for that as I doubt my HS grades would get me into nursing school)).

However; you will not get another blank slate from this point on (ok some schools also forgive college grades, but too few to count) so you have to get good grades in college! You are a military spouse, and college is cake compared to that. Get into your local community college and take their placement test and talk with a councilor, they are around to help you and are great assets. You should also look up mycaa, as you might be eligible to receive grants depending on your spouses rank.

Best of luck, and be sure to use your second chance to prove your meddle.

The only thing your high school GPA matters is getting into a college. Ask to be let in on probationary status, then get as close to 4.0 in your prerequisites as you can.

When applying to the nursing program, they will only look at your college classes.

REMEMBER though: 2.75 is the minimum to even apply. You will need closer to a 3.75+ to have a very good chance at getting accepted to most nursing schools.

i am 19 and i was in the EXACT same situation when i got out of highschool because i wanted to become a nurse(im going to nursing school now) my gpa wasnt high enough to get into universitys or nursing programs. here what to do all nursing programs have pre reqs like anatomy, micro bio, english, psych, etc. contact the school you want and find out the courses they will accept from a community college take all of them at the community college, it will be cheaper too. once you get (its usually either 15-30 credits depending on the school) and your college gpa is like a 2.0 or higher apply to the nursing school. also check with the school and see if they have any adult classes that are made for adults who are going back to school. dont worry youll get in i never thought i would and i just got the call today that i am acccepted into wilkes university. good luck
