Low GPA

Students Pre-Nursing

Published

i was just wondering if there are any pre-nursing students in the same boat as me. i have a low gpa of 2.7 however a 3.4 gpa in my pre-reqs. i have taken all pre-nursing courses and i am also a cna. im so scared of not getting into nursing school and am actually considering changing my major. what do you think i should do?

If I were you, I would submit the application anyway to the school of your choice. You may be fine if your sciences have a high GPA. You will never know unless you try. If you don't get in now, take another course or two in the meantime then apply again as soon as you can.

A lot of schools go just off of your pre-req GPA so you should be fine. Just find a school that uses those grades on the application and you stand as good of a chance as the rest of them! Don't give up or change your major until you KNOW there is no way! :p

If you are still worried about being accepted into nursing school because of your overall grades, you could take some classes that you might have gotten a "C" that way they can bring your overall gpa higher.

I'm with you -- I have a 3.41 and it's not looking too good for me. But, I'm still going to apply and pray like crazy! I have no other options in terms of schools and because I got B's not C's, I can't retake anything. Just keep moving forward. There's no other way to get closer to your goal. :-)

I agree with the others, apply anyway. Do not change your major if this is what you want to do. While you wait, if your school and program allow it, repeat any courses where you got a C. Wait to see what happens and start looking at other programs that may be a little more forgiving or a little further away for your second round of applications. Think positive!

Apply anyway. The worst that can happen is rejection - but you can't even get THAT if you don't try. Do not fear it. Are there any other schools you can apply to in the area, at all? I'm currently considering a school 45 minutes away, in addition to the one near me.

Check if your school has a point system. Some schools look at pre req GPA, total GPA or science GPA or all three and give different amount of points depending on those. If your school doesn't reveal their point system, then I think you still have a fair chance and a leg up because of your CNA experience but don't get your hopes up. Good luck!

I agree with everyone as well. Apply anyway.. you won't know the outcome unless you try. Also your pre-req grades are good! In addition to your GPA, I think strong letters of recommendation are important as well. If you can get a letter from someone at work, I think that will def. make you stand out.

Best of Luck and keep at it :)

Well I used to be in the same boat as you. I just took some classes that I got C's in over. I am also on the Dean's List at my new college so that helps as well.

If you can repeat any classes that you did not do so well in I would. You chances of getting in NS depends on the school you are applying to and the state where the school is. From what I read on posts those grades could not get you in a school in say California...however there are school over here in NY that only care about your prereqs...so it depends on the program and where you are going to be attending school.

If you know of a school that only focuses on the prereqs...apply. You never know.

I am retaking APII and organic chem in order to get into a school in Brooklyn. They only about your overall GPA and the science GPA if all goes well I should be starting clinicals in the Fall. It had been a long journey but I know that it will be worth it in the end.

I think you have a fair chance. The fact that you are a CNA shows that you are serious about pursing nursing. Good luck!
