Love & Hate

do you ever feel we (school nurses) have a love-hate relationship with teachers?

like today they love you because you sent their worst student home.....or tomorrow they hate you because you didn't send a particular kid home because they were not sick... i feel like we can never win ! so darn frustrating !!

I seem to get my toes stepped on a lot (teachers thinking they can diagnose and send home without my opinion). I get frustrated when they send the same student back 2 and 3 times a day when I've sent them back to class the first time saying they are fine. I understand that these kids are bugging the teachers in class but why can't the teacher tell them to sit down and not to say another word about it? Instead they let the student have their way and see how far they can push me! I guess it goes with our territory...

I'm right there with ya! I have teachers who are on each end of the extreme. One who almost never sends kids no matter what they say, then they come see me after school and I find temp 103! Another sends every child for every invisible cut, hangnail, or two week old healing scrape. Yet another rarely sends kids but has no problem calling the parents directly or sending them to the office to call home without me ever seeing them!!!! There seems to be no middle ground.

Just this week a teacher got mad at me for not sending a kid home. I had sent her home last week with pink eye. She came back this week with a doctor's note and the eye is clear, but teacher wants her to go home because the child told her that her parents have not given her the eye medicine that the doc prescribed. Sooo sorry, but the CDC says no signs/symptoms and they stay!

I love teachers most of the time and we have great ones, but boy is it nice to vent!

Sometimes I feel like saying "well, what does the school need me for?"

Everybody has medical advice and half of the time it is wrong!!! Of course, it gives me great pleasure when I can point that out!

My favorite line is "you have a temp - go to the nurse so she can send you home." Yeah that on makes me real happy. I start praying that that kid is a nice 98.6!!!

I feel the same way !

Its like I never win. I can't ever please teachers, principal, parents, and students all at once.
