I graduated as an Associate Degree RN in 1993. I received my license in early 94 and went to work at a skilled care facility and a hospital PRN for about a year. I also worked as an RN in a correctional facility from 94 to 1998. I am wondering what is the best way to get back in to the profession? I moved to West Virginia and want to work in Parkersburg but I think the 8 year delay in my nursing career is hurting me. This is a small city so they don't offer "refresher" courses. Does anyone have a suggestion?

You might be able to find an online refresher course somewhere you can take. I would suggest asking the hospital to hire you on and give you a new grad orientation, so you'll have plenty of time to get back into the swing of things.
Good luck.

Excellent advice Tweety. You'd do well to check with the WV board of nursing to see if they require anything else special before they grant a license.

I agree that a chat with the WVBON is necessary for you to have all the info needed for a license. Have you given Ohio a thought? There are quite a few facilities within easy driving distance. Just remember, the facilities in your area are a very clique. Everyone is related and change, even for the better, is slow to be embraced.
Thank you Gitterbug, P_RN, and Tweety for responding. I will take your advice and really appreciate you taking the time to help me. This is my first time ever posting a message/response anywhere so I hope this is proper protocol!

Here is a link to an on-line RN refresher course that is approved by the state of Wisconsin. I know two nurses who went through it and they speak highly of it. You can check with the WV board to see if it is acceptable to them.
It's also pretty inexpensive.

PMFB-RN, thank you for the information. I wasn't aware of on-line refresher courses so I really appreciate the link!
