leave nursing for something different?

have you ever left nursing for something totally different?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------Re-post from Career board:

Has anyone ever left nursing for something totally different? I'm interested in seeing what people leave nursing to do.

It doesn't even have to be you, it could be a colleague etc.

Sometimes the stress of nursing gets to be too much and we just need something "easier" to do. Or, sometimes we pick another "profession"

I confess, sometimes I want to go back to being a secretary or admin. assistant. 9-5. Do my work and go home. Is that weird?

Any stories to share?

I decided to move from WI to NC. I quit my nursing job of 9 yrs in a state institution in May. I knew that I would have the summer for transition time (couldn't move until Oct). I opted to take a "break" from nursing. I took what I thought would be an "easy" job at a major dept store chain. I ABSOLUTELY HATED IT!!! I worked for less than a month and then found a temp job w/ a visiting nurse service. I was immediately happier in my life because I was back in nursing. After I moved, I got a job in a small hospital. I was back in my niche...taking care of people!!!! I am glad that I had that "break" from nursing because it showed me just how much I loved what I do.

I'm thinking about applying to walmart. Being a greeter at walmart has always been my ideal job. :chuckle

Unfortunately, I'm not qualified to do anything else besides nursing that pays any money.

I got a life and health insurance license and sell Aflac products.

I also sell Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc which has

several products including Identity theft protection with repair/restoration....daily monitoring of questionable activity, etc.

Most states do not require a license to sell the Pre-Paid Legal services....most states consider it a services product.....I do have licenses currently in Arkansas, Texas, with my base being Oklahoma which does not require a license....have applied for

South Carolina and Mississippi licenses also.

It is all about serving people and meeting their needs

....similar in that way to nursing.

I love these and am so glad to be out of stressful

nursing......

I am currently in school and will graduate in the fall with a degree in history, and in the spring graduate with a degree in spanish and with honors. I will start grad school in the spring as well, to become a history/spanish professor - nurses love to teach - but maybe I'll get a little respect in my new career!!!

It's not as fun and interesting as nursing. Believe me as former 4star cashier/people greeter! I used to be so embarrased well not that bad when I would see former classmates from high school and stating "welcome to walmart." Plus as a cashier you stood in one spot most of the time. It was tiring from standing in one spot and boring versus in nursing at least you are running room to room. But then again nursing at least on my medsurg is so frustrating i can see changing to another career however others are telling me to go to another department. Part of my problem is bad management. I think that's the big thing. I want to try icu then after maybe psych. We had a rehab center in the middle of the woods out here near me as a call it "jason country" but it is closed now do to lack of funding. I've been told to search around. I think i better head the advice. Been working 2 years on med surg and i've had it. You know I would LOVE it if there was adequate staffing and help but not allways and management allways trying to get by with the least to save money of course but doesn't make it easier.

Back to original topic i have heard but not personally knowing anyone but one nurse who left and went back to being a cashier and suposedly loved it!

You know I have a pedometer and supposedly you need 10,000 steps/day that's more than needed daily for adequate exercise. ON one shift i do between 7,000-9,000 and EASILY make up the rest before my shift. However I eat junk and it counter balances trying to loose weight. :o(
