I am graduating in December with a BSN.
While most of my peers have already decided where they wanted to go (OB, Peds, ER, etc)....I have no bloody idea! None of the units have caught my interest that much.
How will I know something is my calling? How did you guys know you are an "X" nurse?

I'm halfway through my program and am not really sure what i want to do. whenever i get an idea about a specialty, it is totally different when i experience it.
example: i thought i would really like Peds.. I'm in Peds now, I hate it. Well I dont HATE it, but I know it is not for me.
I thought med surg would be horrible, and i kind of couldnt wait to get out of it last semester, now I'm looking back and thinking, It really wasnt that bad. I wouldnt mind working there for a little bit.
The great thing about nursing is you have so many options. If you dont like one area, find a job in another area. Now, obviously as a new grad you dont want to be job hopping every 3 months. Maybe get a good year or two of med-surg experience and go from there.
Also, could you possibly shadow other nurses in specialties you didnt get to experience in school? Just to get a feel for what those areas are like?

I want to go into the ER because it has a diverse array of visitors and they get funneled out quickly. Really I don't care. I just want the patients to move through my work space quickly.

I just kinda knew i belonged in trauma/ER. I like the acuity of the patients..(most of them anyways hehe)
Have none of your clinical rotations piqued your interest?
My clinicals merely confirmed that med/surg-types of environments are NOT for me AT ALL, and that I'd jump off the Earth if I had to work in a nursing home for a living. I'm on the fence with the ICU. I could do it if I had only one patient maybe, but nah not an everyday preference for me.
I did enjoy the OR very much but my instructor said it's not a good place for new grads....due to the lacking of patient interactions.
And that's bad how?
