lab instructor/i'm on the hotseat

At the start of every lab, the professor always mentions my name first. Asks me a question or wants me to demonstrate something. I'm assuming she's keeping a close eye on me b/c i'm an "at risk student" or something along the lines. Do I have any power confront her. I'm a student with a learning disability..adhd, and i want her to stop picking on me.

Why don't you take it on as a challenge. It will only help you in the future. Maybe the instructor thinks you are a good student and your opinion is wrong.

If you are having a hard time talking in front of the class or not knowing all the answers then maybe you need more practice talking in front of people.

What does ADHD have to do with anything, you are a student in the class, just like everyone else.

"Do I have any power confront her."

Confronting someone is a hostile act - I'd be careful w/doing so.

Your prof may be genuinely concerned or she may be the wicked witch of the west. In any case, maybe just having a discussion w/her would be more appropriate.

I would avoid a confrontation! Maybe she just knows your name. One of my profs is always using my name and a couple of other classmates when giving an example of something. Turns out, she only know 3 or 4 of our names! It could be she thinks you are smart.

Noooo confrontations! Maybe she doesn't know anyone else in the classes name but yours. Or thinks your smart. Or doesn't like you and wants to single you out. Either way, email her or talk to her about it. She'll most likely not realize and understand how it can make you feel nervous.

Maybe she thinks you're awesome! Take it as a compliment. Unless you always answer incorrectly or demonstrate the lab skill incorrectly every time, I'd say she's using you as a role model for the class.

If being first to demonstrate procedures or equipment under the direction of a professor is being picked on, then I would love to be picked on.

Whether you know it or not, this professor is helping you out. Remember, you are not expected to be proficient your first try (although you do have to have a clue about what is going on.) Try to look at the situation a different way - one where you are getting a leg up on your classmates and you might enjoy it.

Relax, try hard, and do your best.

Oh - and be sure to do your lab preparation!
