Kaplan Qbank:time mode or tutorial mode which helps better

Hello everyone, I have schedule to take the nclex-rn June 30 and I am taking the kaplan review course. I have a quick question: should I be doing the qbank in time mode or tutorial mode. Kaplan suggest doing the time mode because the tutorial mode "leads to false hope of confidence". Thanks and Good to all the future nclex takers. God Bless

i just finished my Qbank. and i take my test next wednesday. yikes!

anyway...i did mostly timed, but a couple tutorial. when i did the timed, i felt the benefit of not taking too long on any one question and watching the time, which is how test day will be. i also went through after every test and took notes on what i needed to review or memorize or whatever.

however, when i did some on tutorial, i found it helpful to answer the question without looking at the explanation, and then forcing myself not to change my answer. i would then view the explanation before going on to the next question. i felt like i understood, then and there, what to do or what not to do, as opposed to taking the time to review it an hour later. i feel like they could both be equally helpful; it just depends on what you feel like you need to practice with most - how to answer the question, or managing the pressure of keeping an eye on your time.

good luck on your test! :) you'll do great!

also, on tutor mode, after reviewing the explanation, i wouldn't change my answer. even if i got it wrong, i'd leave it, because at the end, the score would still be accurate as to how many i got right/wrong.

Timed and timed only. You must be ready to answer questions in less than a minute. If you train with plenty of time you'll get there and be lost. Always, always train as if you were doing the test. YOU MUST ANSWER THE QUESTIONS IN LESS THAN A MINUTE, this might be the most important factor in this test.

Thanks! Good luck on your test as well. I will keep you in my prayers. When you take the exam? I think both methods help me but the true benefits come the time mode because the nclex is time. However I love the tutorial mode because I could answer the question and see my answer instantly and write down my notes right then.

Thanks for the advice!:)

You have a point hear, I didnt consider that the nclex looks at how much time you spend on one answer. Thanks!

not a problem! and thank YOU - i appreciate your prayers a lot...i take mine this wednesday, june 9th... yikes!

and also, you might read through the nclex candidate bulletin regarding the time issue....there's a really fine line, and i think that explains it really well.

I've been told that one difference in people who have taken Kaplan & either passed or failed NCLEX was that the people who failed only used tutorial mode. My instructor wants us to use the timed mode...

Thanks. Our kaplan instructor told us that we should only us the time mode for the first set of qbank questions then every question should be in the time mode. Which makes since because the nclex is time and we should not be spending to much time on one question.

Tutorial mode when you are at the beginning of your preparation, still in the learning phase; timed mode when you are coming up on your test date. At this point, with your test date only days away, I would suggest you should be in timed mode.

Timed. In addition to what previous posters mentioned, it will help reduce stress during your actual test because you'll already be used to that timer ticking away...

Thanks for the advice. I am almost done with the kaplan course and I am praying that I pass:-).

Dear PurpleHeart,

I just finished the Kaplan course and everyday I practice practice practice (no ATT yet). I was wondering if you would let us know how you did after the NCLEX, and how you found the questions compared to Kaplan. I keep hearing that the new Kaplan questions are harder than the real NCLEX !! I find the saunders questions much easier, so I just want to know how it goes for you with the Kaplan approach.

Thanks and good luck!!!
