Jury Duty

Published

Does anyone know if you get called for jury duty if you're still supposed to be scheduled for 3 shifts? Or do the jury days count as work days?

Seek clarification from your facility’s policies- most likely there is one that addresses jury duty. My facility will still leave the schedule as is in case the person summoned is released.

In lieu of relying upon your company’s written policy on jury duty in your employee handbook, speak to your supervisor who can make any necessary schedule adjustments.

In my state our jury duty terms are two weeks long; we had to call in every evening to see if we had to report in the morning.

I told my manager and scheduler my dates as soon as I got my summons, so they could plan for my coverage accordingly.

The schedule was unchanged; if I had needed all of my hours (at the time a pay cut wasn’t a hardship) I would have planned to pick up extra shifts on the days I wasn’t needed. In the end I was chosen for a one-day trial on a scheduled day off.

I've never worked in a place that doesn't have a jury duty policy from HR. I've been called almost every year when I lived in the "big city" but only went as far as the jury selection phase and was never picked as part of the jury during the hearing. I missed work the days I showed up in court but was paid for it per our policy. Your manager will need day to day updates on how long you will miss work. I had a co-worker who was gone for a month serving as a juror during a criminal case. Our county courts give us $30 for appearing which I declined, that could have paid for parking but I took public transportation anyway.

I've been summoned so many times I can't keep track of them all.

Ended up on 2 juries, both murder cases, one federal & one local.

I had to show up every Monday morning for the federal pool for three months!), but our contract said if we weren't chosen we then had to report for work for the rest of the shift. My problem was, I worked Monday nights, and the hospital kept saying I had to come in that night if I wasn't chosen, but after spending an entire day in another city 65 miles away waiting, danged if I was going in!

They changed my schedule to later in the week, off my routine Mondays. Didn't like it, but didn't have much choice in the matter. If I wasn't chosen that Monday or Tuesday, I worked my shifts later in the week.

If you get chosen, you get the days off; and if the hospital gives you a hard time about it, get your court clerk involved. Judges get reeeaaaallly pissy about their jury pools getting messed with.

By law you are not required to work within the 24 hours of jury duty.

Is that a particular state law, or federal?

Must be local, as it is not true in my state.
