IV intake calculations...

Published

We really haven't gone over how to calculate iv solutions yet. I'm assuming they believe it's instinctive or common sense in calculations. But I'm very lost. My pt was recieving d-5-w 40/ml per hour in a 1000 ml bag ( i believe) and a piggyback of piperacil of 2.25g with 50ml d-5-w infused at 100ml/hr.

How do i figure out the intake?

140 ml an hour x the # of hours they ran. That's it.

Add up the mls for the hours you were there. So if you were there for four hours the 1000ml of D5W would have ran 160 ml. I don't know if there was any other fluid in the med piggyback but you would put the full 50 ml because this bag would have ran out in 30 mins.

Hope this helps.

For an 8-hour period. . .

The IV fluids: 40 cc/hour x 7.5 hours = 300 cc

The IVPB: 50 cc/30 minutes = 50cc

Total for 8 hours =
350cc IV intake

Ah.. I see. I was trying to add numbers that were not important.

For clarification, why is it 7.5 hours for the IV fluids vs. 8 hours?

Because the IVPB got 30 minutes.

Because the IVPB got 30 minutes.

thanks, I guess I was thinking that the IV fluids would still be running at the same time...now that I think of it, if both the fluids and IVPB ran at the same time through the same line, the med would be diluted.

Still a pre-nursing student, but loving this education!

In the real world when you are figuring I&O... depending on what type of pump you have... there is a option to go in and see the total amount infused for that shift... the only problem is that people forget to clear the pump totals before the next shift comes... so you can't always go by it.

I'll give you a really simple way of doing this very quickly

First thing is the piggyback med... a total of 50 ml rate at 100... that means it went in over 30 minutes.

Now assume that we are working an 8 hour shift... minus the 30 minus for the med

Primary fluid was running at 40 ml/hr for 7 hours & 30 minutes.

40ml X 7.5 hr = 300ml of primary fluid

300ml + 50 ml of piggyback med = 350 for an 8 hour shift.

Good luck,

Angie
