Is anyone working 3rd shift and attending LPN school, dayshift?

Published

I am attending school soon. I've been looking for a 2nd shift job. When I was younger. I work 3rd shift and attended college. Thiswas for a year only or so! Now, I'm older. This is a 2nd career/degree. I've been applying for 2nd shift positions. But, This is Florida. The job game is so rough. 1 million folks unemployed in Florida. I have to work to maintain living expenses.. I'm not taking out a private student loan.. The horror stories of private student loans are not worth it. BTW, I'm not leaving a job before having a job!

I'm wondering if I should keep this 3rd shift in case, i have afternoon clinical or group meetings. I would like to be rested before class.. TIA

When would you sleep or study?

Work nights and school days?

I would sleep before work and study after class. Like I said I'm looking for a 2nd shift position or weekend only.

I'm working nights and going to day classes. It can be done :) I work Sat-Tues and have class tue-sat, with long days for clinicals on thursday and friday. It's liveable, although I live alone so I'm not juggling family in there too.

I'm primarily on an LTC floor and usually there is about an hour or so of down time where I can study a bit. I fit the rest in when I can and I'm doing well thus far. What kind of job are you looking at?

I worked as a unit clerk third shift (1900-0700) three days/week while in LPN school.

Then, I worked 1900-0700 as an LPN while doing the ADN bridge program.

Then, I worked 1900-0700 as an RN for another 10 years for a total of 15 years on night shift.

This is my very first day shift job - lol.

Yes, it can be done but it is very hard. I have an extremely supportive husband but he was deployed for part of this time. It did help that we lived in Las Vegas - the land of 24/7 day care too.

I am also thinking about working a couple nights while in lpn school. I start next month and I think after the first clinical I can do cna work. My classes are m-f 8am-4pm. I've been looking for cna job postings at hospitals and most are 7pm-7am which would be great if I could do just Friday and Saturday nights but most listings say full time so I guess I would have to work 3 which means I may have to go straight to school from work Monday morning and I don't know if I could do that. But I need to work and if I get a job from 5pm-whenever m-f I leave myself no time to study. I need to go to school so I can get a job paying more than $8/hour (which would pretty much just cover daycare and afterschool care after taxes).

I'm looking for anything after school hours. Classes are 730am to 130p,M-F. My current position is a temp job. So, I think it will be non existent in a month. I'm single too with no kids.

Folks are telling that you need to leave this job. This is true. The folks on this job are loo loo heads. If another 3rd shift opp comes avail..hmm, will it be doable.. Like you've said it doable with disclipine. Riight now, I'm wondering. Would I take my uniform for school with me? My school is 30 minutes away. Would I pack bfast, lunch and snack with water? I'm trying to get my game plan together. Because I so the fast food person. I would need good nourishment to sustain me.

Thanks for answering thus far.. Please continue.. I need help and a boost of confidence booster

If you have the dedication, then you can. I had 2 students fail out because they worked nights and would come straight to school exhausted. You say you study at night while working but how can you study in the hospital or ltc? I would do it on the weekends only and thats if I HAD to.

hey u have to do what u have to do! but a couple of my classmates would do that and get burnt out really quickly.plus if any of the teachers found out their were doing that ,they would be dismissed. its a health hazard for you, people on the road, and your residents @ clinicals. i wouldnt recommand it full time but maybe twicw a week:D

I appreciate your feedback. I had an epiphany last week. I dont think, 3rd shift will be doable for me and nursing school. I am working hard to find a 2nd shift job.

The dismissed part is harsh. But, I understand.
