Intro to Computer Science... Online?

Hello fellow pre-nursing students,

Has anyone taken their computer science pre-req online? I am thinking of taking it this summer with my online sociology course. I have taken online courses before, so I am familiar with them, but I would really like what goes on inside the comp sci course. If anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated.!

Thank youu!

I didn't take mine online, but I wish I had. I think it would have been really easy, considering I didn't get much out of the class. It was only for 7 weeks and an overview of Word, Excel, PP. We didn't have any tests, just essays for the midterm and final. I had taken an office systems technology class a few years back so I had good understanding of the Office programs, but even if I hadn't, the class was so basic that only simple computer skills were needed. You'll probably have to put together simple documents/spreadsheets and submit them, nothing crazy. But I could be wrong, maybe it was just my teacher :). Good luck!

Yeah, I'd say be careful. My first undergrad degree is Computer Science and I'd be surprised to see potential nursing students take an Intro to Computer Science course. If you need a computer techniques/literacy course, that would be a bit different than an Intro to Computer Science course.

Right, there is a difference between computer science and computer literacy (that's what I had). I think most schools require the literacy/intro to computers class. They just want you to be computer literate!

It seems ironic to me to have an ONLINE class designed for people who may be computer illiterate.

WOW!! Thank you! I double-checked when you mentioned that & I have to take CIS 100, Intro to Computer SYSTEMS not CIS 101, Intro to Computer SCIENCE. Haha jeez that would have been pointless!!

How about this as an online class, you think I'll be OK? (I know enough about general computers systems).

Course description is: An overview of computer-systems topics is presented, demonstrating how computers can be used as a valuable tool in the workplace. Basic concepts of computing with hands-on activities including the Windows operating system and using the World Wide Web. May not be used to substitute for CIS 101◊ or CIS 119◊. (Formerly 151)

---Do you think it's pretty much a BS class?

Haha I had to edit that like 6 times, no joke. I can't type today!

If it's anything like the one I had to take (COMP 1000), one of the very first lessons was how to turn the computer on. The book had a picture of a power button.

Seriously.

My computer literacy class mainly consisted of labs that baby-stepped you through Microsoft office and a business simulation. The class average was a 95 or something, and it was the honors version. The first computer science class I took (was a CS major for a couple of semesters) is the intro to a programming language. I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be required for anything other than a CS curriculum.
