Interested in Burn Unit?

I never thought about it, but it does sound interesting. I was thinking about working in the ER because such interesting cases come in and it's fast paced. The idea of working with doctors to help patient's when they're in serious need of medical attention and to get them to a point where they are in stable condition seems very rewarding to me. Don't get me wrong, I know floor nursing is very rewarding too, but the ER seems much more exciting. But, I want to work for a while on a med/surg floor to get comfortable with my nursing skills. If the burn unit is interesting to you, then I say go for it.:)

I'm considering trauma or burn unit myself. But I'm a new nursing student and we'll see how I feel later down the road. :)

I am actually working in the burn trauma unit for my final clinical placement. My first day is on Sunday. Yikes.... I will let you know how it goes!

Im a second year nursing student. I've heard of people having great learning experiences at burn units. I've never personally been to one! Our whole class is going to one if the best Burn Centers in the country in the research triangle in NC to have a tour and get a lecture from some of the physicians, nurses, and educators there!!! We are all sooooo excited!

I love ER, Trauma, and critical care so this trip might spark my interest in it. We'll see!

I will! If i can remember too! Lolz! We don't get to go until around the middle of March though .

UGH! My background is pretty much all critical care - all types. I hope you have a better experience in Burns that I did. I couldn't deal with many aspects of critical burn care.. patients in continuous pain, debridement processes (bwaaaaaaarrrrrkkk), the heat & humidity (has to be this way because loss of skin means loss of temp control), and always having to wear isolation garb. It may be a better experience to work with patients who are further along in the healing process... but I'll never willingly step foot in another burn unit.

Hey! So I've had 4 full days in the burn unit and I LOVE IT! You learn soooo much and the nurses are incredible (at least at my hospital). I really needed a unit where I can hone all my skills and this is the unit! If you want to know more about the unit I can explain more!! :)

So if you have a strong stomach and love wound nursing this is the place for you. I have yet to come across a fresh, burn trauma (does not happen too often) but I have cared for inpatient burn patients ranging from 5-40% TBSA that have been there for a few days to months. Like I mentioned, lots of dressings (some take >1hr), IVs, pain management etc. We also have patients that come on our unit with amputations, flaps, and other serious wounds, which incorporates a lot of assessments. It's defiantly a busy unit but everyone helps each other out and it's a excellent working atmosphere. If you need an area to become comfortable with your skills it's a great unit. I have learned soo much in 1.5 moths it's crazy! Other general skills that come along with the unit are catheters, staple/suture removal, sterile dressings, IVs, blood transfusions, trachs, NGs, and many more specific skills!
