In School- When to Start Applying?

Published

I'm about to start my last semester of school. For those of you with experience doing this: when would be a good time to start completing out-of-town (and out-of-state) job applications?

Now. Look for nurse residencies, some start taking applicants early. Look for positions open to new grads and even those that aren't. It's worth a shot. The worst they could say is try again after passing boards.

What the person above said. I would start looking now. They only really hire new grads Feb/March, May/June, and Sept/Oct.

Depending on where you are looking to move though some may require you to have your license before you are even called in for an interview, unfortunately.

I'd start looking now and start applying in January. I had my job secured (contingent on passing NCLEX) 2 1/2 months before graduation.

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

I graduated in May, started applying in February. Network, too. I was offered a job in March where I precepted. (however, due to a hiring freeze, I didn't get to take it when I got licensed)

I agree about researching residency and new grad programs now as well. Have a calendar set with application periods, requirements, and any other pertinent info so you can be prepared.

Thanks for the helpful info everyone. I've already looked in to a couple of residency programs and will be applying shortly. My question was specifically about jobs in the strict sense.
