I'm just about finished with my prereq's, and the more I learn, the more people I talk to, the more I'm sure that this is really what I want to do... but sometimes I just get scared that I won't know what to do, or that I won't know how to deal with things once I'm out of school. It such a big responsibility, to have someone else's life in your hands...
I guess that other people must feel this way, too.

I felt like that right before and after I graduated. I thought I would learn confidence in school, but I must have skipped that day!! Don't worry. Learn everything you can, find a mentor. It is scary, but you learn everyday to have more confidence in yourself. Don't give up. The fact that you realize what a big responsibility it is to be a nurse means that you have a good head on your shoulders. Good Luck and stick with it!! We need you!:)

I remember how it was when I became an RN after being an LVN for several years. All of a sudden, I was the one in charge. Scared me to death. Would I make the right decision? Everytime a problem came up with a patient, it felt like I was dodging bullets.
I was almost holding my breath until the problem resolved, or was handled. After a while, as in all things, experience and time eased my fears. I would bounce things off my co-workers alot at first. Still do, but less often now.
What you're feeling is normal. Relax. It will all come in time. Just remember, your co-workers are a wealth of information, and support.

I was in the same boat. Everyone was saying how hard the program was, and if I could to go somewhere else. I was seriously considering it. I got in at the last minute and was scared ****less. When I actually started, it was hard, but not as severe as everyone made it out to be. I sometimes think they enjoy the look of shear terror on the oncoming freshmen students. If you want it, don't let anything stop you. I am halfway through my first semester of nsg 101 and the things I have learned and the things I have done amaze me. It also makes me want to go to the next step. when you give your first shot, or find a problem in your assessment that no one else found, you will feel like a million $. Don't give up. You can do it. Being scared means you care that you do it right.

You know, "hard" is completely subjective. What one person may find difficult, another person may breeze right through. Midway through nursing school...I stopped listening to my classmates...all their moaning and groaning about how hard everything was. I found that the negative energy was contagious. Once I put all my faith and confidence back in myself...and hung around the people who felt as I did...that feeling of doom and gloom lifted. Plus, I didnt have a very difficult time with nursing school *shrugs* It was trying, long, tiresome and a WHOLE lot of work...but the knowledge was the easy part. The only thing I struggled with was math for meds...but I've never been good in math.
Just keep the brass ring in front of you...stay focused. Don't listen to the naysayers...they are trying to scare you out of a dream. Don't allow it.

Just remember that if you are unsure never hesitate to get a second opinion. Better to ask than make a major mistake. I am an LPN and I am going back to school to get my RN, BSN. So I will be going through some of those fears again. But it is worth it and remember if you want it bad enough you can do it. Angelia
