i do not know about ca. i live in nyc so i can tell you. a person who has annual salary of $47,400 and one dependant... gets around $857 per pay check after deduction of all taxes and a monthly house rent ($950) . in nyc there is federal tax, state tax and city tax. plus medicare and some other deductions. one third of salary is generally deducted.

about cost of living, rent is expensive but other expenses like food etc. you can manage with around $400. travelling- gas and parking both are expensive.and for public transporttaion, $2 per ride. other purchases also come out to be expensive because of the tax thing. i guess internet, cable tv and phone is also expensive in comparision to other sub-urban areas. i am not sure, though.:nurse:

hi starbin: i'm sorry , imight not be following you, but what do you mean by

"after deduction of all taxes and a montly house ren" i mean, is rent deducted directly from your bank account or paycheck?

my question is in order to know hoiw much actually would be on my pay check, in this way i could calcul;ate what kind of housing i'll be able to afford. thank you

You can figure taxes at about 33 to 35%, but that is before you have taken any deducions. You are allowed a deduction of your spouse, as well as children, if you are providing their support. Any of your expenses with working as a nurse, such as cost of magazine subscriptions, conferences, scrubs or uniforms, work shoes, socks, stethescope, etc. are considered deductions and can be taken off of your income when calculating taxes.

If pad that salary every two weeks, you should see about $1000 per check. But again, it depends on the number of dependents that you are declaring etc.

Hi Suzzane: I'm sorry but I still don't get the whole picture. Tell me if I'm rigth.

1) 33 to 35% is deducted from each pay check( let's say each 2 weeks)

2) from that amount of money you pay your , housing expenses, groceries, travel, etc.

3) you could claim for tax deduction for maintenance of your kids, rent, professional purchases

When do you claim for these? After 1 year of being deducted? Please, explain to me.Thankyou

Depending on when your family is going to join you, you can declare them as dependents now, when you begin work. You do not get a deduciton for your rent, sorry. Professional purchases, yes.

There is a form called the W-4 that you will need to fill out when you begin work, this is where you decide on how much that you will want deducted. There is a worksheet with it. You can make chages to this whenever you wnat, you are stuck with the same number all year. If you need more cash in your pocket when you first start working, take a higher number of deductions, just remember to lower it back down so that your taxes will be covered later and you will not need to pay anything out of pocket.

But I definitely hope that your salary is more than $3000 per month.......

Thank you Suzanne; You've cleared me up a lot. Of course that's not my salary, it was just to have an idea on a fixed amount. Again thank you.
