I made too much money last year to qualify for a grant until June. And even then they are pretty small. I need to be able to pay my $2100 per month mortgage. My wife is a teacher, so her income is a modest $47,000. Do you have any links for me?

in Louisiana male nursing students get a tutition breaks because they are usually in the minority, you might check and see if could qualify for any of these

make your application to school of choice, see what kind of a waiting period they have and what kind of preq they require - try and pay off any outstanding debts that you have accrued so that when you are in schooll yo will not be stressed any more than necessary

There are several community colleges in OC that have nursing programs: Santa Ana, Goldenwest, Saddleback and Cypress just to name a few. They are terrific programs--no need to spend extra money going private. It takes time to get to where you can apply. Do you have your prereqs done? If you already have a BA or BS in another field, Cal State Fullerton has a couple of different programs for you as well. UCI has also just started a nursing program (nursing science). You should be able to work part time or at least a little. CNA type jobs pay around $12.00/hr in OC. Good luck to you!

In addition, if you don't have the prereqs/coreqs out of the way, take the time to start whittling those away while trying to save money for you to eventually attend NS. Maybe there are part-time or evening programs in your area? There are also private loans such as Sallie Mae Tuition Answer, but I'd definately take the time to talk to the schools and their financial aid offices, see what the state has to offer, and exhaust everything you can think of before taking out loans to pay for cost-of-living for a long period of time. A lot of hospitals will pay for tuition also if you work for them while you're in school; check around for that also. And best wishes!!

Golden West has a program that they started a semester ago that is weekends. Santa Ana also has a weekend program through St Joes. 12 hour clinicals. I know several people who worked like hell on the breaks like Christmas and Summer so they could work PT during school. A lot of people who do the weekend programs work FT. There are also a lot of scholarships for nurses....tons. One at Golden West was for people with kids and only two people applied and they both split it 5000 each. It only cost 500 a semester at a community college. Get your ADN then get a job like at HOAG. They will pay for your BSN and you can get it onsite.

I can tell you how I am doing it right now...My wife and I started preparing well in advance...payed car off...payed credit cards to zero...established home equity loan on our house, check into that the interest was better than a student loan...My wife works part time and we have a 11month at home. Our families help with the child care...its tough and we don't eat out anymore but we have it figured that we will be about 30 large in debt...My wife has our budget done and the plan is have it payed off in one year. Some of the other things that you can do is get rid of new cars and get cars that are bit older...you save a ton on registration and most of the time can get by with liability insurance only. When we looked at where our money went, we were amazed at the amount of waste and remember its only for a short while and it is the best investment that you will ever make.
