I feel low and need help.....

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

I am sorry to bother you and for my poor English skills, yet please let me express my feeling.

I took NCLEX-RN in May 15th and got result yesterday(it was faster than I thought) said that I did not pass it.

I did not expect that I would see the same questons from Saunders or KAPLAN on my exam. I also know my English skills and medical knowledge are not strong enough to pass the exam, but I could not postpone my ATT validation date, so I tried my best. I had finished KAPLAN review class, QBANK, Saunders 4th edition and CD-Rom. Since I started studying for the first 3 months, I practiced questions around 50. Then, I practiced questions 100-150 everyday. My KAPLAN's average score was 57%. It did not reach recommended score. Instead of choosing correnct answers, I saw a lot of questions which were very different from Saunders and KAPLAN when I took NCLEX. I do not want to excuse, but it was true for me. I almost answered for questions by guess. It made me frastrated and feel low. I thought that all this effort for nothing. I felt like that I was in a different planet and stupid when I took the exam. Probabry all my efforts were not enough to pass the exam.

Being a nurse in the U.S. is my part of goals, so I do not want to give up studying, yet now I am confused how I study and what kinds of material I should use except improving my English skills. If someone has helpful suggestions, please let me know. Thank you for your time.

Sorry to hear you did not pass NCLEX, understanding English is definitely something that needs to be considered when taking this exam. I suggest practising English and if you can read and watch a lot of English speaking stuff, books, magazines, TV, practise with friends and where ever possible do not speak your home language but speak in English (this will also help you towards your English exams that you will have to take for the US part of immigration)

Hello Silverdragon! Let me take this chance to ask about English test. I am a foreign nurse graduate now residing in Ohio for 1 1/2 year. I wonder if I apply for reciprocity they can waive IELTS, am not saying I am very good in English but somehow I can speak and write. I understand it is a reqt. for non-english speaking countries like Philippines. Wonder if there's a waiver for those now living and using English as their language. :lol2:

Thank you.

That is up to the BON some do and some don't. Have seen a few post in the International forum regarding having to take a different English exam to the one they have because it wasn't accepted by the BON even when endorsing.

You need to be persistent. If you feel that work on your English skills is necessary, then do that also. You can never be too proficient with language skills. Best wishes.

dont ever give up. God is good. give some time also in studying ur communication skills. it's one way of understanding the questions being asked. I dont know what books to suggest. but as for me, I reviewed kaplan 2010-2011 and saunder's 4th ed. and remember to relax and give urself time to get back into game. :) Goodluck and God bless:)

Thank you for replying. Actually, I've been learning English class since I came to the U.S. I have lived here for two years, but my English skills are still poor. I think that I am slow learner. It makes me feel stupid and frustrated. When I was a young, I did not spend time a lot to remember, but it became difficult to do it for me, especially after I was forty. Sometimes, I cannot believe myself.

However, I want to believe that I will achieve my goals someday.

Thank you for replying. Actually, I used Kaplan and Saunders 4th ed, too for my first exam. I also used whole Kaplan's question trainers and qbank, yet I could not pass. Even though I like Management of care aria and kept good scores through qbank, an official NCLEX result showed me that I got below the passing standard. I feel kind of miserable...

Thank you for replying. You are right. I know that I need to study hard, but I feel like NCLEX is far beyond my reach right now. However, I will continue learn English to communicate with people and make my life better.

Pinkberry, you can absorb the ability to know and learn english by speaking it. Speak english 24 hours a day, monday through friday. Then relax and speak your native language on weekends. If you are speaking your native language during the time you are not in class or working, you are handicapping yourself. After absorbing yourself in english, soon you will learn how to think in english, instead of translating thoughts and concepts and communications.

The test is hard enough without having to spend brainpower translating the whole time instead of just analyzing the concepts and figuring out what to do.

Best of luck to you....

Jane
