I am DONE!!!!!!

Im done too!! I have done L+D only three years and I recently have been out on maternity leave and am looking for a job away from the bedside. Im done with having to challenge the doctors decisions everyday, being told by management that its my job to physically remove the pitocin from the pump and bring it out of the room when the patient is hyperstim for only ten minutes and get confrontation with the doctors on a daily basis- (not to mention looking like a baffoon to the patients), I feel like they want me to the MD and not a nurse. IM done with managing two inductions on pit, while watching every other nurses strip, trying to be a baby nurse for three nurses at one time while trying to admit a patient, done doing a delivery and 20 min afterwards being told you have a 6cm admission waiting in triage for you, IM done not eating or having a sip of water until 530 pm everyday, done feeling like im going to pee or crap myself because I cant get relief during a three hour pushing marathon....how UNSAFE AND UNFAIR!! I want to be compensated for what Im expected to do, and instead my staff and myself are unappreciated, not valued and totally underpaid. IM DONE!! (sorry for being so bitter!)

You have said everything....how long can they working us like this and then ask why they can not keep good nurses. I AM A DAM GOOD NURSE ! I work hard and care about my patients ...but.....I AM WORE OUT!! I have to be able to come home and be a good mom and wife. This line of works makes it too difficult to do that. I really think that I am done for now.

Thats how Ive felt recently. I've seriously thought about writing a resignation letter 1000 times. I loved my job for the first year. Now I cant stand it. Unsafe practices. Doctors not trusting our assessment skills. I gets old.

Those of you who are young enough to seek another career should seriously do so. Many of us are near retirement and that is not an option for us at this point in our lives. You need to look at what will happen when you near retirement. Will you have anything other than social security ?? It is very scary. The pittance of a retirement that I will get from a facility that has had my loyalty ( and has been well into the black for the last several years ) will provide my husband and me dinner once a month. That is seriously what I am going to do with the small amount.......pick a new restaurant once a month and have dinner on the hospital. Luckily we are not in dire straits and have never depended on any retirement benefits from my job. I do save in a 403 B and can't stress enough to young nurses who think they have a lifetime to save how important it is. I don't blame young women for chosing other professions.......their starting salary tops mine after 35 years !!!!! I think the days of us old loyal nurses are going out the door. I just read of a hospital that has had to cancel all elective surgeries as so many of their staff retired at once...........trust me, no one is beating the door down to do what we have done all these years with no respect whatever from the public or administration. It is a mess, and does ANYONE care except us ????????????????????????

I do wonder sometimes why people (like us) go into nursing or rather why we stay in nursing. We enjoy helping others but we are expected to work for 12++ (and there's always a plus) hours and never get to pee, never get to eat, never get to sit down for a minute or two. Craziness!

Wow. And I thought I was the only one who felt this way.....Just this week! I have been in my LTC position for about 6 years..... 6 Looooong years and I am actively looking for another nursing position. I have come to the conclusion that no matter what specialty we work in, we are under appreciated, under paid and over worked! I know that there is something better out there. Thought about going back to school for a teaching degree.....but teacher's are probably complaining about the same things us nurses are, LOL. The beauty of nursing is, we can switch between the different specialties! I am actively pursuing a position at my other job that is totally non patient care. Praying to God I get it. For all of you nurses out there who want to leave nursing completely, please don't! You worked too hard for your degree. There is a nursing job out there that you will love. Just takes trial and error sometimes! Good luck!

At least teachers are awarded ( or may-be not ) tenure after a three year probation. This is somewhat of a job guarantee.........that they can not be fired for no reason or a dumb reason like the superintendent's son needing a job. We have no such protection. Check into it, most of us work at an "at will " facility.......you can be let go for NO reason. We all know people this has happened to for ridiculous reasons. Young nurses need to look at 40 + years of weekends, off-shifts and holidays. Not being able to take time off in the summer as you took a week last year. Over the 35 years of my career, I have seen respect for nurses completely disappear. I am not an analyst so couldn't tell you the reasons, but most people see it as a menial job today. I have been referred to as a medical waitress............that about sums it up.

Have any of you gotten to the point where you are done??......that is where I am at!

I am exhausted!!! Sick of being put in postions that are unsafe, watching physicans make decisions out of exhaustion, watching patients die. I am done!

I have a hard time reconciling the fact I finished nursing school the top of my class. To give it up less than 5 years later but I do not know how much more I can take. I felt so much pasion about nursing. It is gone

no you're not alone! I actually quit nursing. I am keeping my license just in case I need to work though..but I was sick of seeing drugs pushed with horrible side effects, rude doctors, patients who didn't really want to help themselves, burned out! I moved and now helping my husband with real estate investing!

There are so many nurses looking to get away from the bedside, competition for non-clinical nursing jobs is getting fierce.

Just an update....I left my job in March...and have never looked back. I have no regrets and just had a great Thanksgiving with my family, not afraid of being called in, or having to think ahead that if I had Thanksgiving off that would mean I would have to work Christmas. Yes, I miss my friends from the hospital..but that is all.

You made a good decision. I am glad it is working out for you!

I am at that point, low staffing,horrible management. I love being a nurse, but refuse to work in a position that I am no longer happy with.

I am actively interviewing and looking for other jobs.

Reading these posts just verifies what I already knew. I would hate OB. :) I am a telephone triage nurse. It is sooooooooooooo nice to be able to stick my tongue out and roll my eyes in my head when someone is rude. :) And the doctors couldn't trust us more or work with us better. It is tiring, but I can at least eat and pee when I want. Really, I could pee while on the phone if I had a good headset. Let me know if you need more info.

How did you get started in this? Do you live in the area you telephone triage?
