So just at the end of the day, I got an influx of one 4th grade class coming in because of the teacher's fault.
Our school is from K-8, Kinder and 1st in a separate building, 2nd-4th in the 1st floor of main building and 5-8 on 2nd floor. The 4th grade class goes to the 2nd floor at the end of the day for computer lab. The teacher went late, took them out and right at that time, the bell rings and the older kids all scramble out of there. The poor 4th graders are are against the wall, slammed because of the older kids running around. Then the teacher sends the whole class to me as soon as they come down. These poor kids are hurt, thankfully not injured. I called them all one after the other, took their names, gave them ice packs and send them back to class and called their parents, who are upset.
I'm just disappointed at the teacher who could waited a bit before taking them down, but instead these poor kids got hurt. We are currently trying to fix this situation so this won't happen again, but I just feel horrible for these kids.
Sorry I just had to rant.

A horrible end of the day for you and the students. Hope that teacher has learned from it and others will, too.

i get that - but also where are the teachers for the older kids ensuring that they don't leave the classrooms like a herd of wild buffalo at the end of the day? My guess is that the teacher of the younger kids perhaps did not anticipate that the older children were so rough - however if this is the norm for that floor at the end of the day I'd say that it needs to be addressed. Someone is eventually going to get hurt - be it a younger student visiting the floor for reasons such as computer lab usage or an older student simply getting hung up in the daily melee.
Yeah we are deciding to get some more teachers out on the floor to keep the older students in check on the 2nd floor and the younger kids to leave at least 5 minutes earlier, if it helps.
Because I have gotten other older students who have been hurt by the stampede of students, I almost have too, but since I'm used to it and I literally push my way around and call out to move, the kids move, but I'm an adult 5'3, these were younger kids, I can imagine it must've been pretty scary.

This bugs me on so many levels. it is not the nurse's job to clean up others messes. It is our job to assess and intervene if needed. It seems like parents should have been notified by an administrator who could have said "the nurse assessed your child and he / she is ok."
And then everyone needs to come up with a better plan to ensure safety of students.
The admin and I were both calling them parents for the situation.

Make sure that whole class gets a lecture about not stampeding out the door. Put the worst offenders in detention for 15 minutes, and they'll remember.
