How much OT did you work in 2006?

Published

Just wondering what it's like in other areas. Are you short staffed? Crying for prn/casuals? Do you get turned down for vacation time regularly because there is no one to replace you? How many OT hours do you put in? Are you paid time and 1/2, double, or straight pay?

I have a friend who is doing a bunch of holiday overtime hours in a row to take her family on a vacation. She's getting 1.5x for the first shift, 2x for the second, 3x for the third. Cha-Ching! $$$

Fully paid family vacation for her with all of three days of work!

I didn't work any overtime last year because I've been in school. This last month my situation has changed and I can usually get one shift in every week easily and more if I choose. When we are short staffed they don't use prn or travelers because they are too cheap and would rather us take 8 patients that day. There used to be a bonus for working extra but they dropped that. We do get time and a half starting, even if you're not a full-time employee. Or those of us who work 3 12's get the time and half at hour 37 rather than having to wait until 40 hours.

I made over $25,000 in overtime this year -- about one extra shift a week (give or take).

But yeah, I'm a little burnt out.

I averaged about 1 extra shift a week using our hospital's shift auction system where nurses "bid" on open shifts in hospital units. I picked up extra shifts in my own NICU, as well as our PICU. I probably made about $20-25k extra.... paid off my BMW, as well as most of my school loans! I need to keep on doing it though, since grad school looms ahead!! It's getting tough to find extra shifts now that my unit is fully staffed.

I worked 16 extra hours per week since July. But since I'm weekend option and I'm an aide I don't get premium pay. Only RN's and LPN's get premium pay when they come in on a day not scheduled.

I took a week long cruise in July. I told the supervisor who does the schedule well in advance of my vacation. I had the needed hours - or so I thought. I came back from my relaxing vacation with a nasty email from the DON saying I was 2 hours short of my required PTO hours necessary for time off and next time I would be cancelling my vacation as she wouldn't let me off. Under my contract, I'm allowed 4 weekends off a year. This was my first weekend requested off. The thing is, no one would cover me on the weekend. There are people just hired who are told they don't have to do weekends and they won't even do ONE weekend a year to cover me. I sent her an equally nasty email back telling her I was not cancelling my vacation because no one would cover me and that I routinely come in on my days off. Never heard back.

The policy is that everyone is supposed to do every other weekend (8hrs) or every third if you work 12's. Weekend option staffs the weekends. And don't get me started on the holidays. Under my contract I have to work one spring/summer holiday and one fall/winter holiday. I did Easter, Memorial Day, Labor Day, July 4th, and will be doing all winter holidays except Christmas Day. I feel like shoving that contract under their noses.

I have been actively looking for another job that treats it's employees with more respect.

Sorry for the rant. But I think it's unfair.

I am an LVN in Texas who earned about $15,000 in overtime beyond my base pay rate. I don't know exactly how many hours that translates into, though.

I have done maybe 1-2 extra shifts since May. I always have my name on the list for LC ....I'm not lazy I just enjoy being off! :lol2:

I worked a lot, but didn't keep track really. Last 3 months I have been averaging about 105 hours every 2 weeks. We could work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if we wanted to. There are that many uncovered shifts.

I work PRN and get a flat pay with no diffs except one. I am required to work one holiday per year and get paid $7 extra per hour from midnight to 7 a.m. (I work nights). That's not even time and a half. At the other hospital I worked, I would get shift differentials even though I was PRN there also and if I worked a holiday, I'd get time and a half. I know, you may be thinking I should've stayed with the pay at the other hospital. But, I make a lot more per hour even without the diffs that it's worth where I'm working now.

Since I work PRN, I don't have to work overtime. I did once, but I normally won't because I don't get any extra for it and that's too much wear and tear on my body, lol.

I am a staff nurse I only work .8 so that any extra days I work are at a higher rate. We are annoyingly well staffed. Our travelers keep going per diem on us because they like it here. :icon_eek: It is getting harder to find overtime unless I do a double shift from 2300 to 1530. We get double time for the second 8 hours. We get time and a half for anything over 8 and an extra 15% for short call. I used to do 2 double shifts a month for mad money but I have only done 1 in the last 3 months.

no overtime here!....it's not mandatory at the hospital i work at, and i don't volunteer. i work my 40 hours per week and thats enough for me. as a matter of fact, i haven't worked any overtime (with the exception of maybe 30-60mins over my shift) in the past 20 years that i've been employed there.
