I'm about to start a two year BSN program in SoCal. Am I crazy for wanting to commute 90 minutes (75-80 miles) one way for 3 days a week? I would be against traffic both directions. The COL where my school is located is average. It would cost roughly $700/bedroom if I were to find a few other people to live with in a house, but I'm living rent-free with my folks at the moment. I have commuted a hour to school each direction (50 miles) before and I didn't think it was that bad.

My commute time for class is only about 20 minutes (with a toll) so not so bad, but clinicals can send us up to 40 minutes or as little as 5 minutes away. I think it's not so bad since most of your classes are pretty long, it's only a few times a week and it's not even that often for the whole semester depending on clinicals. BUT, you might want to check the range of locations they use for clinicals to make sure they're not sending you an extra hour in the wrong direction. If you can, ask a current student. They tend to give more straightforward answers about how often you might be sent where.

Some people just like driving! As long as you don't mind, it's fine. It might be interesting to calculate how much you spend on gas each month versus renting a room closer to school to see if you are truly saving money, though.

I drive 30 minutes each way. Some of my classmates drive for 2 hours depending on traffic/time of day.

10 minutes, although my Clinical site is 1 hr 10 min away and starts at 7am, so that will suck.

My school is about 45 min away from my house. So far I have had to commute up to an hour for a clinical site.

For those that have short commutes, how many of you are actually located in big metro cities like Los Angeles? Because I feel like that is the trend here. Bigger cities = more traffic = longer commutes.

It really depends if you are up to the commute. You can always change your mind and move. Socal has one of the worst drives, even if you are going against traffic. I've done 1.5hr commutes in traffic to clinicals, and that was my limit. But I have many many classmates who where driving an hour to class or clinicals. I live in a big city area so driving long distances in traffic is not uncommon.
