Hi, I need information from those of you that know...how to decrease your appointment, to keep your foot in the door (I got a new job I think will be less challenging, but less toxic, and am hoping to eventually move into a more challenging position within that org), and be able to pick up if need be (financially), and maybe come back if I decide I do want to stay.
I am worried the asst mgr or mgr will say no, that I can't decrease from .8 to .2 or .3.
What are the ins and outs on this? What is the best thing to say? Any advice? thanks so much in advance.

Wow. You terminology is as foreign to me, as it was hilarious. I was tempted to leave a very ungentlemanly joke somewhere here, but obviously, thought better of it.
I will really try:
Decent managers will appreciate all information up front and direct, with honesty. You have to assess whether or not your manager will hurt you with the information or not, and adjust what to say to compensate.
I have been in one position, early in life, where I was too honest and got burned, in one later where I was smarter, not entirely open, and protected myself, and another time where I was 100% open and was treated fairly, and with as much consideration as my outgoing company could give.
Obviously, only you can probably estimate how your company falls. Best of luck, and thanks for allowing me to redeem my sick mind.

I also find the terminology puzzling...I suppose you mean "decrease your FTE?" This would mean that instead of a Full Time Equivalent (full time position) you would become .8FTE or 80% of Full Time.
If this is your question, I would say "it depends". In some institutions they would be delighted if you were going to agree to work 80% of each day but still come in each day. They may be less than delighted it you wanted to work full time for 8 days out 10 and take off the others. On the other hand, they may be watching the budget and be glad you asked.
I suggest you test the waters gently to see how your manager thinks about it. Then, if the response is favorable, you could venture further and indicate you would be interested in this option.
Good luck.
Hi, sorry for the confusion, I guess I meant 'decrease' my appointment, from .8 to .2 or .3, which would basically end up being every other weekend.
I worked on this unit for about 3-4 years at the desk/floor as cna, graduated last year, but have had a little trouble now delegating. One aide, out of the blue, was very hostile and totally yelled at me, eyes narrowed, finger pointed. I was upset, crying, went to mgt, they said they would 'take care of it' from their end, but that this aide was 'an excellent worker', and i 'was too sensitive', and 'needed to be a leader'. I took a week off LOA.
I had some great shifts, then had to work with this hostile worker again, and ended up avoiding her. She complained about that. I said I was intimidated, and that she was hostile to me.
We had a mtg, and it did end up like the jerry springer show, with this aide twisting the truth, lying, being loud, and 'poor me'. I stated my boundaries had been crossed by this aide, that I felt intimidated, and I clarified what the aide was saying, though mgt simply said 'she has her truths and you have yours. I lost some faith in the mgt. Or maybe they dont care, and just want us to work together, but I feel my reputation has been muddied by this worker, when I was being truthful, ect, if you know what I mean. I work too hard and sincerely for this drama, and felt this is somewhat dangerous for me professionally.
anyway, though I like the unit I am on overall, except for some of the aides (esp this one) and lack of support from mgt, the area is great-- I learn alot, I did in my period of feeling down apply for and get, a new job at a different hospital, though a less critical area, more challenged by socio-economically challenged patients than critical care medicine.
I accepted the position, and now and wondering if I made the right choice...PLEASE HELP!
I feel I should have given this original unit at least another 6 months, but.........
Any ideas anyone?? I will be eternally grateful!!

I sense some ambivalence in your post.
Are you excited at all about your new job?
Why are you having doubts at this stage that you want to not completely give up your old job?
Per diem might be an option.
It is common for nurses to have a second per diem job where I work. It keeps skills and contacts up for nurses who have jobs in teaching or research, or who need extra money. You could ask for that.
