Yup, that sounds about right for starting pay. It is a lot of responsibility but there are also a lot of benefits to the job... time off, no weekends, no holidays, good retirement and good health plan. Don't feel like a chump, you know ahead of time the pay scale and if you don't want to work for that amt of money, don't take the job. Unfortunately I don't think the pay will ever reflect what we are truly worth. I do love my job though.....low pay and all :nurse:

Connecticut is one of the States with the higher salaries for RN's and LPN's..but I have to say when I saw how much my City pays their RN's..I nearly choked! The lowest paid LPN's in any area (doc office, ltc, etc) make more than the School nurses do in my area and they want experienced RN's..sad really, they want creme de la creme of RN's but aren't willing to pay well!

However, if the opportunity presented itself for me, I'd jump on it quick. The lower hourly salary would be well worth it with the scheudles the school nurse has at our schools..no weekends, no holidays..many many 1/2 days throughout the year, the long spring and winter breaks, not having to worry about driving in the snow, being a City employee with the great health/dental benefits they get, paid sick time off, same hours as my grade school daughter...so so worth the lower pay to me.

Don't feel like a chump. If the pro's out weight the con's of the job..I'd say you're the winner!

While not the usual pay for an RN, it certainly beats the $12 an hour previously posted about.

Specializes in school nursing, ortho, trauma.

I took a huge paycut to become a school nurse (ok, not huge, but it seemed like it at the time) But over the summer i pick up some extra work and the value of having the weekends, holidays, summer and snow days is also high.

besides - It's all relative to the rates of pay in your area. How does your pay compare to other school nurses in your area?

If it helps, when I factored in the fact that my health insurance cost me $0, I actually took home more than in my previous job where I earned a higher hourly rate. If you can swing in, I'd do it. As the others have mentioned, the other benefits of a school nurse job are more than worth it.
